Yaten is a character from Dragalia Lost. He is a festival planner who is normally very lazy but becomes incited whenever the idea of festivals is brought up.

Adventurer Stories Episode 1 An Unexpected Arrival Euden: The town is really starting to look like its old self again. Cleo: It's true that the building repairs are almost complete... Cleo: However, I fear the entire town still has a rather gloomy air. Euden: Well, they WERE just attacked by fiends; no one can blame people for feeling low. Cleo: Buildings can be repaired, but alas, hearts are not so easily mended. Euden: I wonder if there's something we can do to cheer them... Hmm? What's that? Cleo: Someone has collapsed on the ground! Euden: Are you all right?!  ???: Nghh... Euden: Can you talk? What happened?!  ???: Need...grub... Euden: Grub? Wait, do you think he collapsed out of hunger? Cleo: I've been helping out at a nearby café. Let us take him there, quickly!  ???: *chomp* *horf* *slurp* Euden: I've never seen anyone eat so fast. He even puts Ranzal to shame! Cleo: He must have been famished.  ???: That really hit the spot.  ???: I owe you two big time. Euden: We're just glad to see you up and well. Cleo: But what were you doing lying on the ground to begin with?  ???: I heard a rumor about a town that was attacked by fiends.  ???: I started making my way there and must'a forgotten to eat. Cleo: I wasn't aware eating was something one could simply "forget" to do. Euden: So far as I know, this is the only town in the area that's been attacked lately.  ???: Well, guess I made it safely. Nice. Cleo: If you call ending up collapsed on the ground "safe," then yes.  ???: Meh. Details. Euden: Still, what drove you to come here and— Young Man's Voice: I've made up my mind! Euden: Huh? That came from outside. Mayor: I'm begging you! Please reconsider! Young Man: No, I'm leaving this town, and that's that! Fiends have already come for us once, so who's to say they won't do it again?! Young Man: But all people keep talking about is how safe and prosperous Chanzelia is! Young Man: What's wrong with wanting to live somewhere you can feel safe? Mayor: But ever since those fiends came, this town's population has been shrinking by the day. Mayor: At this rate, it's only a matter of time before we dry up and blow away! Mayor: Please, you must stay here and help get our town back on its feet! Young Man: Nothing you say will change my mind. I'm outta here. Euden: Er, is everything all right? Mayor: Ah, Your Highness. My sincere apologies for disturbing you with all of that. Euden: It sounds like that man is leaving? Mayor: Him and many others besides, I fear. Mayor: I understand how they feel, but if everyone leaves, this town has no future. Mayor: We're SO close to rebuilding everything!  ???: I got this. Euden: Er, you got...what? Cleo: Do you have some manner of plan?  ???: I sure do: We're gonna have a FESTIVAL! Euden: A...festival. Yaten: Yep! Oh, the name's Yaten, and I'm a festival planner from over in Hinomoto. Yaten: I've been traveling around and livening up towns with festivals for a long while now. Cleo: You do that? As in, for a career? Yaten: Yep! Look, people leave towns because they don't feel like they have a future there, right? Yaten: My festivals are all about giving people hope in their hometown again. Euden: Huh. That actually sounds promising. Yaten: Nothing brings light to the world like a good festival! Mayor: Please, sir! You must arrange one of these hope festivals with all speed! Euden: If you really think this will work, you're welcome to use our castle as your base of operations. Yaten: You guys royalty or something? Cleo: This man is a prince of Alberia. He rules over a castle in the Mistholt. Euden: I'll be happy to help however I can. Yaten: Huh. You're a real big shot. Mayor: Then will you plan a festival for us? Yaten: Sure, why not? It'll be a kick in the... Huh? Cleo: Someone's coming. Natalie: Where the hell have you BEEN, Yaten?! Yaten's Partner Natalie Yaten: You're here just in time, Natalie. Because guess what... Yaten & Natalie: IT'S FESTIVAL TIIIME! Yaten: Huh? Natalie: Huh? Yaten: Why'd you say the same thing as me? Natalie: Guess we're just on the same wavelength. Yaten: Well, you're right—the boss man here asked me to throw together a festival. Natalie: Then let's make it a festival these folks ain't never gonna forget! Yaten: Ha! This burg's gonna be up and full of life in no time! Episode 2 Growing Suspicions Euden: Good morning, Cleo. Say, have you seen Yaten anywhere? I can't find him. Cleo: No, he wasn't in his room this morning. But he's such a hard worker, it wouldn't surprise me if he got a jump on the day. Euden: He's a real pro, all right. I can't wait to see the next thing he comes up with. Cleo: Agreed. ...Hmm? Mayor: Er, I'm sorry for disturbing you both so early in the day, but there is a matter that we need to discuss. Euden: Of course. How can we help? Mayor: Well, I'm having second thoughts about whether I should allow Yaten to plan our upcoming festival. Euden: Oh? Why is that? Euden: ...I can't believe that Yaten is napping and slacking around town all day! Euden: He seemed so serious about the festival before. Cleo: The mayor appeared taken aback as well. Still, there's only one way for us to ascertain the truth, and that is by asking Yaten directly. Euden: And speak of the devil! Yaten: ...... Euden: He really IS napping! ...Also, he looks VERY comfortable on that bench. Cleo: No wonder the mayor was concerned. We'd best go wake him up. Euden: Hold on. It's possible he's just resting because he's been working since the sun first came up. Euden: Let's wait a while longer and see what he does next. Cleo: I find your optimism almost charming, but very well... Yaten: ...... Cleo: I fear Yaten shows no signs of moving from his comfortable bench. Euden: I suppose you're right. Cleo: We've given him enough of a chance. Let's march over there and—Oh! Euden: He woke up! Euden: So he WAS just resting! Cleo: I don't think we can conclude that until we actually see him doing some WORK. Let us follow him and see what happens. Yaten: Gimme the usual. Stall Owner: Of course, sir! One salted-meat sandwich and lentil soup, coming right up! Cleo: He appears to be getting lunch. Euden: Well, he really wolfed that down. Let's see where he goes next! Café Owner: I'm so happy to see you again, Yaten! Yaten: Can't get enough of the meat you got here. Now, what should I get today...? Cleo: How many stops does this make? Euden: Umm, I think this is five? Cleo: This is no manner of work that I am familiar with. Cleo: He's merely ambling around the town, stopping only to talk and eat! Euden: Yes, but... Hrmm... Yaten: ...... Euden: SURELY he's going to start working soon. Cleo: Hold on. Is this not the park where we first saw him this morning? Yaten: *yawn* Guess I should hit the hay. Cleo: I cannot watch this idiocy a second longer! Don't stop me, Euden! Euden: Cleo, wait! Cleo: What do you think you are doing, Yaten?! Yaten: Wow, Cleo. You look pretty riled up. Cleo: Do not "Wow, Cleo" me! Cleo: You told us you were going to bring life back to this town with a festival! Cleo: Yet here you are sitting idly about! Yaten: Hey, I've been working. Cleo: You have spent the entire day napping, talking, and cramming various foodstuffs into your gaping maw! That is NOT work! Yaten: Wait, are you following me? Euden: The mayor came to us to share his... concerns about your work ethic. Cleo: So we decided to follow you and see if his worries were justified—which they most CLEARLY are, you slugabed! Yaten: Stalking someone isn't nice. Also, I really WAS working. Cleo: Horsefeathers, sir! HORSEFEATHERS! Yaten: No. Really. That's how I work. Cleo: I'm amazed you can afford the amount of meals you eat if you consider that "work." Yaten: Oh, I eat for free. Cleo: How is that even possible?! Café Owner: Excuse me there, but are you Prince Euden? Euden: Yes, that's me. Café Owner: I was informed that you're footing the bill for all of Yaten's meals, correct? Euden: WHAAAAA?! Stall Owner: You there! Prince! I need you to pay off Yaten's tab before I go broke! Euden: WHAAAAAA?! Cleo: Have you been eating for free all this time by saying the prince will pay for your meals?! Euden: Now I understand why we never saw him hand over any money for his food. Yaten: You said you'd help however you could, right? Can't take that back now. Yaten: Anyway, I gotta get back to wor— Natalie: YAAAATEEEEN! Yaten: Aw, hell. It's Natalie. Natalie: Stop goin' around causin' trouble! Also, why the hell ain't you been checkin' in with me?! Yaten: You don't need me to watch your every move. I know you got this. Natalie: Yeah, but there are things *I* wanna talk to *you* about. Now get over here! Yaten: Hey! You're gonna yank my arm off! Euden: What was THAT about? Cleo: She did make quite the entrance. Still, I think we can leave him to her. Stall Owner: Soooo about that money... Together: *siiigh* Episode 3 A Man of Two Extremes Yaten: Just five more minutes... Natalie: Ya been sayin' that for an hour, jerkface! Now GET UP ALREADY! Yaten: Noooooooooooo! Euden: Um, what's going on here? Natalie: Sorry, Princey! Just tryin' to get Captain Idiot here outta bed. Natalie: Anyway, I'm gonna head into town. Don't keep me waitin'! Euden: Are you sick, Yaten? You look unwell. Yaten: Nah, I'm just tired. Yaten: Just lemme sleep for a bit here. Euden: Oh. Of course. Euden: (Wow, is he STILL not up? It's noon!) Euden: (He used to leave the castle at the crack of dawn, but lately he's been sleeping in more and more often.) Notte: Uh oh, guys! We got a problem! Euden: What's wrong, Notte? Notte: A huge argument just broke out between Natalie and the townspeople! Euden: We'd better check it out! Yaten: Hang on. I'm coming. Euden: When did YOU get up?! Yaten: The little wing lady woke me with all her caterwauling. Now come on. Let's go. Town Guard: As if an outsider like you can do anything to help our town! Man: A festival is the last thing we need! Now get out of here and leave us be! Natalie: Wouldja all shut up for a hot second and LISTEN TO ME ALREADY?! Town Guard: Nothing you can say is worth hearing! Honestly, I have no idea what the mayor was thinking when he brought you on. Town Guard: Our first priority should be ensuring the town is properly defended from fiends, not THIS utter nonsense. Man: Oh, forget it. This town is a lost cause, and everyone here knows it! Town Guard: What was that?! Natalie: Ah, hell. Now you're fightin' each OTHER?! Town Guard: Stay out of this, outsider! Natalie: SAY THAT AGAIN, PUNK! Yaten: Everybody just slow your damn rolls for a minute! Sheesh! Natalie: What are you all doing here?! Yaten: Standing around carping like this is just gonna tire everyone out. Yaten: So let's be adults and TALK. Town Guard: And what would you have us "talk" about?! Yaten: How about the reason behind holding a festival? Man: There isn't one. Case closed! Yaten: I didn't suggest that your mayor hold a festival without a reason, you know? Yaten: So look, protecting the town is important. No one wants fiends attacking it again. Town Guard: And that is why— Yaten: But! How are folks supposed to come together and protect it without unity? Yaten: Unless you lot think you're tough enough to go at everything alone? Town Guard: Well... Yaten: Fortunately, the town's almost back to normal, which means a festival is a great chance to celebrate that AND bring everyone together. You follow? Yaten: A good, cheery festival where everyone speaks their minds is the perfect place to put together plans to get this town back on its feet again. Yaten: And look, as long as the prince is here, you guys know you're safe—so why not give this festival a chance? Man: Still, the thought of letting an outsider organize a festival for us is... Yaten: Well, THIS outsider's got it all covered. Man: Wait, is this the plan for the festival? Man: Ah! This is a list of our town's traditional arts and crafts! Town Guard: He's using them to decorate the town and the stalls. It's impressive work for an outsider, I'll give him that. Yaten: Eh, you pick it up pretty quick if you just hang around and keep your ears open. Notte: Wait a second. So you actually WERE working this whole time?! Euden: You weren't just eating and talking— you were actually learning about this town's customs and culture. Man: Hmm... It says here you're planning to use gold decorations on the floats? Yaten: That's one of your traditional designs, right? Seems perfect for a float. Man: It's a fine idea, but who will make it? All of our artisans have already left. Yaten: I got you covered. ...Here. Man: Whoa! This is... Yaten: All I did was copy other people's work. Still, I think it turned out all right. Man: I'm sorry, but you cannot simply pass off an imitation as the real thing. It is an insult to both the town and our artisans. Man: ...Which is why I will teach you to craft these items for REAL. Yaten: Ha! Sounds like there's at least one artisan who stuck around! You're on, pal. Man: I can't stand around and do nothing when an outsider's doing this much to help us. Town Guard: I agree. We at least owe it to you to see this festival out. Euden: Well, that was a lot of effort, but I'm glad it all worked out. Yaten: *yawn* Glad I didn't stay up making that for nothing. Notte: Is that why you've been so tired lately? Natalie: I TOLD ya not to work nights, dummy! It makes ya too tired to work in the DAY! Yaten: Guess I'm just nocturnal. Yaten: Anyway, if we're done here, I'm starving. Natalie: Ya better not stick the meal on someone else's tab this time! Euden: I honestly can't tell if he's got it together or is actually a complete mess. Notte: I KNOW, right?! Episode 4 The Planner's Promise Man: All the stalls are ready, Yaten! Yaten: Nice. Then go help Natalie prep the floats. Café Owner: Yaten, I've thought of some new dishes for the festival. Would you care to try them? Yaten: Sure thing. I'll be along in a while. Euden: Yaten! The florist's new work is finished! Yaten: I'm sure it looks great. Mayor: Well, the festival is almost upon us. Mayor: Anticipation for it seems to have made the town much livelier. Euden: Maybe that's why more and more people have been volunteering to help lately. Yaten: Yep. This is gonna be one for the books, so look forward to— Town Guard: Fiends! We've got fiends incoming! Euden: What?! Town Guard: I saw them from the lookout tower! Town Guard: They're still a ways away, but it's only a matter of time before they arrive! Stall Owner: Just when life was getting back to normal! Young Man: We only survived by the skin of our teeth last time—now they'll finish the job! Yaten: Calm down, everyone! Mayor: I can't believe it's come to this... Yaten: Can you help everyone evacuate into the castle, Euden? Euden: Of course. But what are YOU going to do? Yaten: I got my own job here in town. Elisanne: You aren't planning to flee? Yaten: I promised the folks here they'd have the best festival around. Yaten: I can't let 'em down after getting their hopes up like that. Young Man: Staying alive is more important than some festival, you fool! Yaten: Which is why you should get out of here. If I wanna be a fool, that's my business. Yaten: But if I can protect the town while protecting the festival, all the better. Young Man: Wait... You really just want to protect the town, don't you?! Yaten: Get 'em out of here already, Euden! Move it! Child: I want to fight, too! Yaten: Get outta here, kid! Child: I'm looking forward to the festival, and I'm gonna fight to save it! Town Guard: You have my steel as well! Town Guard: This is my home—I can't turn tail and run while an outsider risks his life for us. Man: I agree—we can't just throw away all the progress we've made up to now. Stall Owner: I won't let our home be destroyed again! Natalie: Well, I'll be damned... Man: You've made me realize this town meant more to me than I thought. Stall Owner: My food stall is here, as well as decades worth of family recipes. Town Guard: We can't let those damn fiends take anything else from us! Yaten: Right then. All of you stay here and keep the fiends from entering town and wrecking our festival stalls. Yaten: Me and Natalie'll go meet the enemy outside the gates. Yaten: You ready, Natalie? Natalie: I was BORN ready! Yaten: At least this way the town should avoid being caught in the crossfire. Yaten: Let's finish 'em here and now. Natalie: Don't need to tell me twice! Euden: I couldn't agree more. Yaten: That's my ma—Wait, what the hell are YOU doing here, Euden?! Euden: The townsfolk asked me to help you. Elisanne: They seem to have their defenses well in hand, so I agreed. Ranzal: I thought all them town types were a buncha cowards, but they came through! Euden: You really unified everyone, Yaten. Yaten: Nah, it wasn't me. All I did was remind everybody what the town means to 'em. Yaten: I put together a festival to fill 'em with hope for their town's future... Yaten: And we won't let some fiend mess it up! Euden: Then let's keep the town safe! Notte: Fiends at twelve o'clock, guys! Yaten: Ha ha! There's nothing like a good fight to get a festival started! Episode 5 A Festive Miracle Yaten: ...... Euden: Are you asleep, Yaten? Yaten: Hell no. Who sleeps during a festival? Yaten: I was just listening to the music and the chatter. ...It's nice. Euden: Everyone's really enjoying themselves. I'm glad we could pull this off. Yaten: I never do a job that isn't perfect. Euden: I can see that. Yaten: Did you actually doubt me? Euden: Maybe a bit—what with the eating and napping and all. But clearly I was wrong. Euden: You know, I bet people would trust you more readily if you showed the same enthusiasm you do for festivals for other kinds of work. Yaten: Yeah, but I only wanna work when there's a festival involved. Euden: Ha! That certainly sounds like you. ...Say, can I ask you something? Euden: Why did you become a festival planner? Yaten: Hm. Well. What's the dark to you? Euden: Uh, sorry. What? Yaten: See, to me, the dark is terror. It's scary as hell. Yaten: I was abandoned in the mountains as a kid, and on that first night alone, it got dark like I never knew existed. Yaten: I figured I was gonna die all alone in that dark...until a festival planner saved me. Euden: I have to admit, that's one of the more unusual origin stories I've ever heard. Yaten: My rescuer came from a village of festival planners, so that's where I was raised. Yaten: The place was always full of happiness and life. It...changed me. Yaten: I found I wasn't scared of the dark if there was a lantern or three around to light up people's faces. Euden: There IS something special about a festival at night. Yaten: I learned that a festival is a sorta miracle, and swore to bring that to everyone. Euden: So why did you leave Hinomoto? Yaten: Figured it was only a matter of time before I was made the village leader. Euden: And you...didn't want to do that? Yaten: I'm no leader. Yaten: Besides, Hinomoto's got loads of folks who know how to put on a good festival. Yaten: But the rest of the world doesn't know what it's missing. Yaten: If there are folks who don't even know what a festival IS, it's a waste of my talents not to show 'em. Euden: That's a pretty amazing tale. Yaten: Nah. I'm just living how I wanna. Young Man: THERE they are! Yaten: Hey, aren't you the kid who told the mayor he was leaving and never coming back? Young Man: Yes, but I changed my mind—and I wanted the two of you to know first. Euden: What brought this about? Young Man: I spent tonight talking to old friends and eating snacks from my childhood and... Young Man: Well, I guess it just reminded me how much I love this town. Young Man: This isn't just some place to live. It's my HOME. Yaten: That's good to hear. Young Man: Sort of embarrassing how it took a festival to remind me of that, but there it is, I guess. Young Man: I mean, what good is a home if the people who live there don't protect it? Yaten: Damn straight—although you've also got this prince here to help you out. Euden: That's right. If you're ever in danger, you can always count on us. Young Man: I hope I never have to take you up on that. Anyway, my friends are waiting, so... Yaten: Have fun at the festival. Yaten: Seems like the mayor has nothing to worry about. Euden: Festivals really are miracles. Yaten: 'Course they are! Why else would a lazy idiot like me spend so much time on 'em? Euden: I wonder if you'd be willing to put a little something together for the castle? Euden: We have a lot of refugees there, many who have suffered great loss. Euden: I think you'd be just the person to lighten their hearts a little bit. Yaten: Okay, but you'll have to pay me— and don't say I owe you because of all the meals you bought! Euden: Heh. I'm happy to pay you, Yaten. Yaten: Then it's a deal. Yaten: Hell, if I stick with you, I'll probably run into all kinds of folks who need the power of a festival to lift their spirits. Yaten: And whenever I take a job, I always deliver the best! Euden: I'm looking forward to it.
