Wii U Pro Controller is a controller for Wii U. It is an updated version of the Classic Controller Pro for the Wii. Unlike the Classic Controllers which needed to be plugged into a Wii remote via the expansion port, the Pro Controller sends wireless signals independently to the console via Bluetooth (interestingly, if the controller is connected directly to the console with a Mini USB cable, the controller will not take advantage of that. The battery can still be charged this way though).

It also features its very own power and sync button. Like the Wii U GamePad, it's also one of the first Nintendo controllers to feature clickable analog sticks. A vast majority of Wii U games support the Pro Controller. The controller does not typically come with the Wii U system, unlike the Wii U GamePad.

Uses[]

The Wii U Pro Controller is for those who want something more traditional than the larger Wii U GamePad. The controller shares the same buttons and general layout of the GamePad, but heavily resembles an Xbox 360 controller in shape (although the ABXY buttons and right analog stick have swapped positions compared to that controller).

The lightweight nature of the controller makes it proficient for long play sessions. The battery life for a full charge is very long, losing its charge at around 60-80 hours. The controller charges through a long Mini USB cable that can connect to the Wii U system or USB ports on other devices.

Unfortunately, the Wii U Pro Controller has no earphone/headset jack. Depending on the game, voice chat is commonly done through the Wii U GamePad microphone or a separate headset that connects to the Wii U system itself. It's worth noting the Wii U Pro Controller is not compatible with the Wii mode or digital Wii games.

Trivia[]

  • The Wii U Pro Controller was announced at E3 2012 by Nintendo.
  • The controller uses Bluetooth to connect to the Wii U like the Wii Remote, so it is possible to play with more than seven of either controller in any combination. This is not applicable in most cases, but there are some games like Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Runbow where the max player count isn't possible with just Wii U Pro Controllers.
  • This controller uses the same type of battery as the 3DS (model number CTR-003).
