The Wii U GamePad is the primary controller for Nintendo's Wii U console. The controller incorporates traits from tablet devices as well as traditional input methods (such as the A, B, X, and Y buttons, anolog sticks, etc.) and a 6.2-inch resesitive touchscreen. The touchscreen is said to be used to provide new gameplay experiences, whether it be as simple as a map and easy access to items or even new views into your gaming worlds. It is even possible for the console to stream the image being displayed on the TV to the controller in order to keep playing games when the TV is either powered off or doing something else.

The controller was first revealed alongside the Wii U at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in 2011, with the name "Wii U GamePad" announced June 3, 2012.

Prototype to Final Wii U GamePad

The Wii U GamePad is shaped in a similar manner to the orginal Nintendo Entertainment System controller but much larger to accomodate the LCD screen placed in the center. The screen itself is a single touch resesitive touchscreen similar to those on both Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS. Alongside the screen are your traditional input buttons, like the A, B, X, Y buttons, a +Control Pad, Start/+ and Select/- buttons, etc. It also incorporates a microphone and rear-facing camera for both in-game voice chat and video chat. The prototype originally featured Circle Pads similar to those of the Nintendo 3DS but were replaced with anolog sticks to supply buttons underneath them when pressed down.
