Wii U is the upcoming eighth generation successor to the Wii. It is Nintendo's sixth home video game console. The Wii U will be released in 2012 however an exact date is of yet unconfirmed. A prototype of the system was revealed at the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo, otherwise known as E3.

Features

The controller of the Wii U resembles a tablet. It has four face buttons, two circle analog sticks, four shoulder buttons, a D-pad, a home button, a start and select button and a power button. It features inner facing camera and a gyro sensor. It will also hold a stylus for precision movement on the touch screen, similar to the Nintendo DS system. The Wii U will allow people to play games on the tablet and on the TV screen. The Wii U will also allow people to video chat other Wii U owners.

The following are some key details and bits of trivia about the Wii U and its unique controller.

  • The Wii U's controller is single touch only.
  • The Wii U will be released sometime between April and December of 2012.
  • Despite looking like a tablet, all processing is done on the console itself.
  • The controller will have rumble feedback.
  • Nintendo-developed Wii accessories will be compatible with the Wii U. New accessories, including a new Zapper-styled controller, are in development.
  • The Wii U will be backwards compatible with Wii software and accessories such as the Wii Balance Board however unlike the Wii the Wii U will not support Nintendo Gamecube software or accessories.
  • Like the Wii and Nintendo 3DS, The Wii U will have Miis.
  • The Wii U tablet will be used not only as a controller but players will be able to play their games on the touch screen instead of the television.
  • The Wii U not only has improved graphics to the Wii, it is rumoured that Nintendo's recent move into HD (high definition) gaming will surpass both it's rivals, the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360
  • Confirmed titles include LEGO City Stories, a new Pikmin title and a new Super Smash Brothers. The Wii U Smash Brothers will be compatible and ineractive with the future Nintendo 3DS title of the series.
