The Wii Family Edition (also called the RVL-101) is the second version of the Wii. It was announced on August 17, 2011 and was released in North America on October 23, 2011, in Europe on November 4, 2011, and in Australia on November 11, 2011. It was not released in Japan. Unlike the original model, this model is designed to only sit horizontally and is incompatible with Nintendo GameCube games and controllers to make the system cheaper. It was followed by the Wii Mini in December 2012 and was discontinued, along with the original model on October 21, 2013.
