The Wii Family Edition (also called the RVL-101) is the second model in the Wii family. It was announced on August 17, 2011 and was released in North America on October 23, 2011, in Europe on November 4, 2011, and in Australia on November 11, 2011. Unlike the original model, it was not released in Japan. Also, unlike the original model, this model is designed to only sit horizontally and is incompatible with Nintendo GameCube games and controllers to make the system cheaper. It is also not compatible with Wii games that require the use of GameCube controllers such as Active Life: Outdoor Challenge. It was followed by the Wii Mini in December 2012 and was discontinued, along with the original model on October 21, 2013.
