"Who Gets to Keep Togepi?" is the 50th episode of Pokémon the Series. The episode marks the first appearance of Togepi, making it one of the Second Pokémon Generation Pokémon to debut in the anime before its debut generation. It first aired in Japan on June 25, 1998, and in the United States on March 27, 1999.

Plot[]

After Ash gets his Pokédex updated to have a new voice, Team Rocket steals the egg that he found a few episodes ago and Meowth starts taking care of it. The trio soon catches up to Team Rocket, and in the scuffle that follows, the egg hatches into a brand new Pokémon, Togepi. Everyone wants to own it, so they have a small Pokémon Tournament. In the end, Ash wins the tournament, but since Misty was the first person Togepi saw when he hatched, it thinks she is his mother and stays with her instead, making the tournament utterly pointless.

Trivia[]

  • Who's That Pokémon?: Aerodactyl
  • As noted by the above summary, this is the episode in which Eric Stuart replaces Nicholas James Tate as the Pokédex's English voice; however, at least two episodes set earlier chronologically, "Holiday Hi-Jynx" and "Princess vs. Princess", would erroneously have Stuart voicing the Pokédex due to being dubbed later.
  • This is the first episode to show a Pokémon hatching from an Egg.
  • The sound effects played during the Pokédex upgrade process included sounds originally from Star Trek: The Next Generation.
