Nintendo has just revealed the lifetime sales for the Wii and Nintendo DS. As a bonus Nintendo also revealed how many of the lifetime DS sales were for the recently released DSi. First, let's take a look at the Wii. According to Nintendo, they've sold a staggering 52.62 million units worldwide. Unfortunately, sales were down for the Wii compared to the same time last year, though this is to be expected due to the drought of mainstream titles that were released earlier in 2008 such as Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit. Super Smash Bros. Brawl was also released earlier last year which accounted for quite a bit of sales too. This year there hasn't been much prior to June with games like Punch-Out!! and Excitebots barely making a dent. Later this year, however, expect sales to dramatically increase. Wii Sports Resort has just been released and it's expected to boost the Wii's growth, and in a couple of days Monster Hunter 3 is being released in Japan alongside the black Wii. I'm sure the slow Wii sales in Japan can be attributed to some gamers waiting to get the Monster Hunter bundle as well. In a few months gamers will also get their hands on New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Wii Fit Plus.

Now for the Nintendo DS, it's worldwide lifetime sales are an even more impressive 107.75 million units. Nintendo also confirmed that the DSi has already sold 6.68 million units, which is a lot more than I expected. If there are any games that will cause a surge in DS sales this year it'll be Professor Layton, Scribblenauts, Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver (in Japan), The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks and Style Savvy.
