History

Turnips are a projectile commonly found in Mario games but go largely unnoticed in the main series titles. First appearing in Super Mario Bros.2, these vegetables would vary in size and shape. They went dormant for a while in Mario games until they reappeared once in the remake for GameBoy Advance, and then again in Super Smash Bros. Melee, in Peach's Down B, where she plucks a turnip from the ground that has certain effects depending on their visual expressions. Once again, their appearance faded, until 2014's Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, where they make a triumphant return in 3D!

Description

The main, most famous Turnip, holds a blank expression, similar to the one found on the Super Mushroom and Star-Man. It has green stems sprouting from the top and holds a triangular shape with rounded corners.

Game Appearances

*These two feature turnips, but not the design that relates to the projectile, and likely not references to the projectile.

Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario Advance

The turnips in these games are of many different concepts originating in Doki Doki Panic, that evolved into staples across the series. They are used as simple projectiles, collected by plucking them from the ground. They are thrown in a diagonal angle across the screen, killing any enemies that it makes contact with. The main types of turnips are grouped with other vegetables, that all function the same, and have relatively the same size, while the sprouts, though functioning the same, are much smaller than them. You can also come across Giant Turnips, that once again function the same way, but have a much larger hitbox. They are also used to defeat Wart in the final battle.

Super Smash Bros. (Melee, Brawl, Wii U, 3DS, Ultimate**)

Turnips in Smash Bros. are used by Peach in her down B move, where she plucks one from the ground and can throw it like a projectile, which have a different trajectory to ones found In Super Mario Bros. 2.
