Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (known as Tony Hawk's Skateboarding in some parts of Europe), often abbreviated as THPS, is an arcade-style skateboarding video game, and the first in the popular Tony Hawk series.

Gameplay[]

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater is an arcade-style based sports game where the goal is to successfully perform and combine stunts, cartwheels, and grinds, in successful ways that add to the player's score. The trick point value is based on the time held, the degrees rotated, the number of tricks performed in sequence, and the number of times the tricks have been used (the more often a trick is used, the less it is worth). Successful tricks also add to the player's special meter, which, once filled, allows for the execution of signature moves better known as special tricks that are worth much more than normal tricks. Bails (falling off the skateboard due to a bad landing) do not award points for the attempt to do the trick and reset the special bar to empty it.

Game Boy Color[]

The Game Boy Color version, being not a port of the original game, but an adaptation of its elements, has a different and more limited gameplay compared to the other versions. Only nine tricks are possible, with all routines removed and the ability to rotate just for ollie. This is less than an average of twenty-five tricks per skater in the main games.

There are three game modes. In "Half Pipe Mode", the goal is to score as many points as possible in one minute by performing tricks on one of the three half pipes. In "Tournament Mode", the player competes against three computer skaters through five levels, trying to rank the highest in each race. "Versus Mode" is the same as "Tournament Mode", players charge people by paying them money; except the player only competes against another skater (human or computer) and only through one level.

Levels[]

There are nine levels in total for the game: 4 levels of free play, 3 levels of competition, and 2 levels of relegation. The non-competition levels have the five ribbons that are collected by fulfilling certain objectives: get a high score, get a professional score, collect the SKATE letters, interact with five objects and find a hidden ribbon. You can score each goal one at a time or exceed five in a two-minute session. To advance to the next level, you have to collect a certain amount of tapes before continuing.
