Tomato Adventure is an RPG developed by AlphaDream and published by Nintendo. The game was the second video game created by AlphaDream and the first AlphaDream entry to be published by Nintendo. The gameplay bears a resemblance to the later AlphaDream title Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. It was only released in Japan.



A Gimmick in the game is a special attack that the character can perform. Each Gimmick is executed in a different fashion (similar to the Bros. Attacks of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga). In all, the Gimmicks are separated into four categories including timing (gimmicks that involve pressing the correct buttons at the right time), renda (hit the same button multiple times in a row), speed (hit the button very quickly), and dokidoki (includes gimmicks that don't fall into the other categories). As in Superstar Saga, you can raise the difficulty level of each gimmick before you perform it, which, while harder to perform, will raise the "Awesome" gauge faster. Each gimmick has a set limit in which you can use it, and after each gimmick runs out, all of them will refill.


Early on in development, Tomato Adventure was titled Gimmick Land (named after the Gimmicks in the game) and was for quite some time developed for the Game Boy Color. Due to the release of the Game Boy Advance and the increasing disinterest in the Game Boy Color, Alphadream recreated the graphics and sound and retitled it Tomato Adventure for the Game Boy Advance. The game was never released overseas.


After the very positive response of Tomato Adventure, Nintendo gave AlphaDream the rights to develop a Mario video game that soon turned into Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. The game was heavily modeled after Tomato Adventure, though this time was released in the American, European and Australian markets. It was popular enough to warrant four sequels, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, and Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam.
