Togedemaru(JP) is a Pokémon species of the series of the same name. It is a Electric and Steel Pokémon introduced in the seventh generation in Pokémon Sun and Moon.
Physiology & Behavior[]
Togedemaru is a spherical, rodent-like Pokémon. Most of its front is white, while its back is primarily gray. It has black eyes, a short pointed snout with a black nose, rounded ears, and a circular, yellow marking on each cheek. Scattered across its back are 14 fur spikes that appear as yellow and brown triangular markings. When attacking, surprised, or agitated these spikes will stand straight up. There is a tail-like needle on the back of its head. The needle is gray with a yellow tip and is shaped like a lightning bolt. Additionally, it has stubby arms and legs.
Togedemaru uses the needle on top of its head to attract and gather electricity. Groups can be seen gathered with their needles standing upright, waiting to be struck by lightning on stormy days to make up for its somewhat limited electric capacity. Some Trainers use its ability to absorb electricity as a strategy in battle. The opponent is coaxed into unleashing an Electric-type attack, and then has that power turned against it. When it is pleased, this Pokémon will curl into a ball and roll around uncontrollably. Togedemaru clashes with Elekid whenever it tries to steal the latter's electricity, usually ending with even matches.
A special Togedemaru in Alola serves as the Totem Pokémon for the Hokulani Observatory's Island challenge. This Togedemaru possesses an energy that originates from Ultra Wormholes, which takes the form of a golden, flaring aura. This energy is called Z-Power.
Appearances[]
In the anime, Sophocles owned a Togedemaru.
Togedemaru appears as a Poké Ball summon in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It uses Zing Zap, calling down a lightning bolt on itself in order to shoot out sparks from its body.
Origin[]
Togedemaru may be based on a New World porcupine, given how it can stiffen its triangular body spines. It could also be based on a hedgehog, a chinchilla, or a Ryukyu spiny rat. According to its Pokédex entry, the tail-like spike on its back serves as a lightning rod. When Togedemaru's spines come out, marks may appear on its cheeks that resemble North American and Japanese electrical outlets.

Title | Entry |
---|---|
Seventh Pokémon generation | |
Pokémon Sun | The spiny fur on its back is normally at rest. When this Pokémon becomes agitated, its fur stands on end and stabs into its attackers. |
Pokémon Moon | The long hairs on its back act as lightning rods. The bolts of lightning it attracts are stored as energy in its electric sac. |
Pokémon Ultra Sun | When it's surprised or agitated, the 14 fur spikes on its back will stand up involuntarily. |
Pokémon Ultra Moon | Its capacity to produce electricity is somewhat limited, so it gets charged up by letting lightning strike it! |
Eighth Pokémon generation | |
Pokémon Sword | With the long hairs on its back, this Pokémon takes in electricity from other electric Pokémon. It stores what it absorbs in an electric sac. |
Pokémon Shield | When it's in trouble, it curls up into a ball, makes its fur spikes stand on end, and then discharges electricity indiscriminately. |
