The Flintstones: The Treasure of Sierra Madrock is a 1994 platform game, developed by Taito. It is based on the Hanna-Barbera animated series The Flintstones.

Plot[]

At a meeting of the Royal Order of Water Buffaloes, the Grand Poobah announces that he is retiring, and he is looking to give his title to whichever member manages to find the legendary treasure of Sierra Madrock. Fred, looking to be the chosen successor, embarks on finding the treasure, with Barney assisting him, but first they have to battle their fellow members for the necessary equipment.

Gameplay[]

The game is set across five worlds - Bedrock, Magmarock, Snowrock, Junglerock, and Caverock. A single player takes control of both Fred and Barney, unless the 2-player mode is selected, in which case the first player controls Fred and the second controls Barney. On each world's map, both characters roll a dice, which will determine how many spaces ahead they move. Depending on where they land, the player then has to play through a platforming stage, battle a sub-boss, gather as many items as possible before the timer runs out, or play a mini-game.

In the platforming stages, Fred or Barney can use their clubs to attack enemies or break open barrels which contain items. On occasion, breaking a barrel may instead release Cavemouse from the "Dino and Cavemouse" segments of the 1980 Flintstone Comedy Show, whom Dino will then run in to chase with a net. When in midair, Fred and Barney can also briefly hover to slower their descent or perform a double jump (which costs a clam), which comes in handy when trying to cover a large gap.

To clear the first three worlds, the player must guide Fred or Barney to one of their fellow lodge members who are also after the treasure (Joe Rockhead in Bedrock, Quartz in Magmarock, and Marble in Snowrock). These rivals will only give up their equipment if Fred or Barney beats them in a race at the nearby stadium. (The cutscenes always show both player characters regardless of which player gets to the rival.) At times, particularly if the player characters are getting close to reaching him, the rival character will roll a dice himself and move further away. The player can also go to the stadiums early to practice the racing stages. After winning the race against the rival, the exit to the next world will open, and the player only needs to send one of the characters to it to progress. In Junglerock, no other lodge members have made it that far, so the goal of that world is instead chasing down a pteranodon that has stolen the duo's compass. After making it into Caverock, the only objective is to simply get both characters all the way to the end of the map where the treasure is located.

Wilma and Betty frequently show up in Bedrock and Magmarock, annoyed that their husbands are off on this ridiculous quest. If Fred or Barney run into their respective wives on the map, Wilma or Betty will drag them home (or rather, back several spaces); if one character runs into the other's wife, they just have a brief conversation.

Trivia[]

  • This game's subtitle was also the title of an episode from the last season of the original show; however, the TV episode had a completely different plot.
