Surf (なみのり, Surfing) is a damage-dealing Water-type move introduced in the first generation. It is HM03 in the first six generations. It became a TM in the seventh generation and is TR04 in Pokémon Sword and Shield.
Effect[]
In battle[]
The attack deals damage to all the opposing Pokémon. In the fourth generation, the effect was changed to hit ally Pokémon as well. It can hit Pokémon using Dive and will deal double damage. In the sixth generation, the move's power was reduced from 95 to 90.
Cramorant using the move can activate Gulp Missile, which will change its form.
In Contests[]
Outside of battle[]
The move is used in the first six generations to ride Pokémon across bodies of water, In most of the games, it is required to progress through the game. Some items and secret areas are hidden across the bodies of water. The player can fish while using Surf, which can be helpful for certain Pokémon.
Starting in Pokémon Sun and Moon, the move is replaced by different functions in the game such as Ride Pokémon. In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, the move can be used outside of battle again but only through the Pokétch HM app.
Surfing Pikachu[]
Surfing Pikachu is a special Pikachu introduced in Pokémon Yellow in a minigame. Normally, Pikachu cannot learn the move. Pikachu can be taught the move in Pokémon Stadium if the player brings a Pikachu to the Master Ball division of the Round 2 Prime Cup with Pokémon all from a Generation I game. After this game, most of the Surfing Pikachu are special Gift or Event Pokémon. In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, surfing Pikachu can be acquired in the Yellow Forest with the Pokéwalker.
If a Pikachu uses surf in Pokémon Stadium, Pokémon Stadium 2, Pokémon Colosseum, Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness or Pokémon Battle Revolution, it will play the special animation with Pikachu riding a pink surfboard for the move.
