Nintendo

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System controller (also known as Super Famicom controller in Japan) had a rounded dog-bone like design and added two more face buttons to the Nintendo Entertainment System controller, "X" and "Y", arranging the four in a diamond formation. Another addition was the "L" and "R" shoulder buttons, which have been imitated by most controllers since.

There is a slight variation in the Japanese and European version of the controller, where the A, B, Y and X buttons are all convex-curved and each one has a distinct color (A was red, B was yellow, X was blue, and Y was green). For the American Super Nintendo Entertainment System, the A and B buttons were colored purple, whereas the Y and X buttons were lavender and concave-curved.

The controller was discontinued along with the SNES itself in 2000.

Trivia[]

  • The New-style SNES has a variation of this controller with an engraved Nintendo logo instead of the SNES logo. The text for the Start and Select buttons is also embossed instead of printed on this version of it.
  • A recolored SNES controller is used in the movie Toy Story 2 when Rex was playing a Buzz Lightyear video game, and then Hamm at the near-end of the movie.
  • Donatello in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows film is carrying a recolored SNES controller on his arm.
