Trivia[]

  • Being a successor to Super Mario 3D Land for the Nintendo 3DS, the game uses live recorded music focused primarily on band and rock, and sometimes orchestra. One of the game's most-celebrated assets is the soundtrack.
    • 3D Land also featured jazz-style music, though only digital compositions.
    • Mahito Yokota is the lead composer and some tracks are similar to the Super Mario Galaxy games.
  • This is the first game to be composed by Yasuaki Iwata since joining Nintendo in 2013. He would later work on Mario Kart 8 and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
  • Series' sound veteran Koji Kondo composed three soundtracks in this game.[1]
    • He worked on the music for the "Seaside and Athletic courses." [2] This most likely implies the "Sunshine Seaside" and "Chainlink Charge" tracks given their Japanese names. The "Seaside" level themes have two variants (above-water and underwater), and thus the game contains two separate tracks for each one. The 3D World soundtrack combines both of these variants into one track. The "Athletic" theme, meanwhile, remains as an entirely separate track.
    • All three tracks are different variations of the same melody.
  • Much of the music performers later returned for Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario Odyssey.
  • Guitarist Tomori Kudo has also worked on the music for the Xenoblade Chronicles games as part of his ACE group.
  • First mainline Mario game for Toru Minegishi as a composer, who later worked on the music for Super Mario Maker 2 which features 3D World as a new game style.
