SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake is a 2023 3D platforming video game, developed by Purple Lamp Studios and published by THQ Nordic. Based on the SpongeBob SquarePants series, it features its original voice cast.
The game was released on January 31, 2023.
Gameplay[]
A single-player 3D platformer, players control SpongeBob SquarePants as they navigate through themed worlds (also known as "Wish Worlds") and rescue his friends. In each world, the characters automatically change costumes to match the worlds' themes. Aided by Patrick Star (who was transformed into a balloon), he will occassionally assist the player by bringing extra health (underwear), and respawning SpongeBob from a fall.
The main collectables in the game are "cosmic jelly", which are scattered throughout worlds. Other collectables include golden spatulas, gold doubloons, and world-specific items for side quests. None of the collectables are required for completion, and doubloons and jelly are used to purchase in-game costumes.
The game runs at a lower frame-rate compared to other versions of the game. The gameplay is similar to Battle for Bikini Bottom and its remake.
Plot[]
When SpongeBob and Patrick accidentally used up their wishes with the Mermaid's Tears, Bikini Bottom has been transformed. With the help of Cassandra, the two must travel through Wish Worlds to rescue their friends and restore things back to normal.
Development[]
The game was developed by Purple Lamp Studios, which developed the Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated remake.
Reception[]
The game received mixed reviews from critics. On Metacritic, the Nintendo Switch version has a score of "73" based 21 reviews.[1]
Destructoid praised the variety of the game, writing "Each world brings with it a unique feel and presentation, from chasing down some cosmetics in Medieval Sulfur Fields to setting up a light show in Halloween Rock Bottom".
Trivia[]
- This is the first time anything SpongeBob is shown in a Nintendo Direct.
