Shantae and The Pirate's Curse is a game released by WayForward Technologies initially for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U consoles. It is the third Shantae game in the Shantae series, following the overdued sequel Shantae: Risky's Revenge. In 2018, a port was released on the Switch console following the success of the original counterparts.

The game was initially released as a downloadable software on the online services of the eShop only for each of the consoles it was released for; however, this was followed up with physical productions of the game for the 3DS and Switch consoles on later dates, in a strange instance of both forms not being released simultaneously as with most games.

A sequel was released in 2016 called Shantae: Half Genie Hero for the Wii U and other consoles.

Story

Following the events of Shantae: Risky's Revenge, in which the guardian genie girl Shantae was forced to defeat the embodiment of her genie powers, Shantae has been adjusting her life without her genie powers. However, one day Shantae is approached by her old nemesis, Risky Boots, who informs that her genie magic shattered into 30 shards. The 30 shard had fused with Risky's minions (Tinkerbats), causing them to become more powerful and overthrow Risky, plotting to resurrect her old mentor, The Pirate Master, spelling doom for all of Sequin Land. Offering a deal in which Shantae can gain her genie powers and Risky can her former glory, the two strike up a reluctant alliance to recover the magic shards and thwart Pirate's Master resurrection. Without Shantae having her genie powers she is forced to learn how to be a pirate to make it through her quest.

Gameplay

Player take control of the titular Shantae, as she tries to recover the 30 shards of her genie powers scattered across Sequin Land. Unlike the previous Shantae games, in which Shantae used her magical belly dances to transform into various creatures, she must now seek out Pirate Gear to progress through the game. These items include daggers, pistols, scimitars, cannons, and anchor grappling hooks.

Many of these items have multiple uses, for example the daggers can be used to create footholds on the walls as well as attacking enemies. Pirate Gears can be upgraded throughout the game to make more effective.

New and old locations throughout Sequin Land appear. The player traverses new areas such as the underworld and the heavens. The map system from the previous installment will be changed to a more Metroid-style map system and like Metroid, there will be hidden paths.

The game also features some 3D effects that are similar to Mighty Switch Force (another Wayforward title).
