Shantae is a Game Boy Color video game released in 2002, with its distribution handled by Capcom. Upon its release, the game was overlooked due to the release of the succeeding Game Boy Advance console the year before, which the game hadn't been released for. Though it missed the spotlight, Shantae got largely positive reviews.
The game had been made available on the Virtual Console service for the Nintendo 3DS in North America and the PAL regions by WayForward, with the "Distributed by Capcom" screen at the startup of the game removed. This version was released on the Nintendo Switch in 2021 with a physical release by Limited Run Games. A sequel to the original Game Boy Color game was released on DSiWare in 2010 called Shantae: Risky's Revenge.
Plot[]
Shantae is a half-genie living with her Uncle Mimic in Seaside Town. One day, her town is attacked by the evil Risky Boots. She is tasked with locating and returning the Steam Engine that the pirate stole.
After many trials and tribulations, Shantae eventually uncovers the Four Elemental Stones that she needs to prevent Risky Boots from getting. However Risky catches Shantae off-guard and steals them once again. Eventually it is revealed that Risky was looking to create a powerful steam-powered weapon in the form of the Tinkertank. The final battle with Risky involves destroying the Stones and the Tank, then taking her on in a showdown. Shantae eventually triumphs and becomes famous throughout the land.
