The Rotten Mushroom(JP) is a purple, zombie-like Mushroom introduced in Super Mario Maker 2. In nighttime Overworld stages, it replaces the 1-Up Mushroom. It is similar in function to a Poison Mushroom in that it damages the player character upon contact, however, Rotten Mushrooms actively chase the player making them much harder to avoid.

Mario series[]

Super Mario Maker 2[]

The Rotten Mushroom only appears in Overworld stages that have been set to nighttime. Once one appears, it does damage on contact and it will actively follow Mario, Luigi, Blue Toad, or Toadette instead of moving in a set direction like a Poison Mushroom and can even jump up one-block high ledges. If the Rotten Mushroom is prevented from reaching the player character somehow, such as by walls, it will instead go in the same direction as the player character as far as it is able. If the player character is under the effects of a Super Star, Rotten Mushrooms will run away from them until it wears off.

In the Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros. U styles, it is possible to use a Yoshi's tongue to bring a Rotten Mushroom through a Warp Pipe to another type of area, where it will display unique behavior depending on what area it is.

  • They behave as normal, only upside-down, in the nighttime Underground theme.
  • They are slowed by water, but jump three blocks high instead of two in the Forest and Underwater themes.
  • They have a small circle of light emitting from them in the Ghost House and Underwater nighttime themes.
  • They are affected by the low gravity in the Sky and Airship nighttime themes.
  • They are slowed down by lava and poison in the Castle and nighttime Forest themes, respectively.
  • They are unaffected by the wind in the nighttime Desert theme.
