Development[]

Rayman DS was developed by Ubisoft Shanghai and released in 2005 as a launch title for the Nintendo DS. Rather than being a brand-new entry, the game is a direct port of Rayman 2: The Great Escape, originally developed by Ubisoft Montpellier and released in 1999 for the Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, and other platforms. The goal during development was to bring the critically acclaimed 3D platformer to Nintendo’s new handheld while showcasing the DS’s dual screens and touchscreen features. However, due to the technical limitations of the DS and the rushed nature of the project (to coincide with the system’s launch), the port suffered from performance issues such as frame rate drops, awkward controls, and downgraded visuals. Touchscreen controls were added but not always optimized for the gameplay, and the lack of polish compared to the original Rayman 2 drew criticism from fans and reviewers alike. Despite this, Rayman DS introduced the classic platformer to a new handheld audience and helped establish the DS as a viable system for 3D gaming—though later ports and remakes of Rayman 2 were better received.
