Raven Beak is the main antagonist and final boss of Metroid Dread. He is a Chozo from the Mawkin tribe and he wants to turn Metroids into biological weapons. To do this, he sends a transmission to the Galactic Federation in which an X-Parasite is seen in ZDR and hacks the 7 E.M.M.I. units sent by the Galactic Federation in order to make Samus take over the mission and make the 7 E.M.M.I try to kill Samus to extract her Metroid DNA.
Personality[]
Raven Beak passionately values power to the core, shown that he often declares that power is everything and his motto is printed on his robes in Chozo language, and he still keeps reciting this mantra even after he becomes infected and undergoes a horrific mutation by a Purple X. As Quiet Robe describes him, Raven Beak worships the altar of power, which contributed greatly to him exterminating the Thoha Tribe, when they plan to destroy SR388 along with the X-Parasites and the Metroids, which Raven saw the latter as a kind of symbolic power that he must have to achieve galactic domination. Additionally, the Metroid Dread Gallery shows how apathetic and ruthless he is to even his own tribe, as shown when he doesn't express any concern for their safety during an X outbreak when trying to contain them in Elun, exercises capital punishments on those who slightly objects or defy him in anyway such as feeding them to an underwater monster, as a demonstration to those who tried to defy him in any way, and even has Quiet Robe killed for revealing vital information on his past and ambitions. When Samus also refuses to submit her will to him upon seeing through his disguise as her AI companion, ADAM, he has no qualms in killing her through use of weapons, brute force, or strangulation. Only those that were devoted to him were left alive.
Raven Beak is also pragmatic, intelligent, and manipulative. After his first battle with Samus, he realized that the Mawkin genes he gave to her early in her life can be leveraged to bring out the full potential of her Metroid DNA. Instead of killing her when he had the chance, he causes her to pass out and confiscates her power-ups before disappearing. He was aware that of the Metroids' general hostility, so he changed his plans from having her killed and simply taking her Metroid DNA to handicapping her and leaving her to survive the hostile environments along with the rogue E.M.M.I. robots that were out to hunt her down so that Samus can awaken her Metroid abilities to which it overrides the Thoha DNA preventing the transformation from taking immediate effect. He even went as far as considering cloning Samus herself after he tricked her into awakening her power. He is shown to be very arrogant and conceited as well as he boasts that Samus would always be inferior to him, no matter how hard she tries to match up to him while posing as ADAM. This arrogance proved to be his downfall and underestimation on the true terrifying nature of Samus's Metroid DNA. Despite viewing Samus as his daughter, Raven Beak never gave her any form of fatherly love and affection towards her and tends to see her as more of a pawn rather than his own child.
Despite his traits, Raven Beak once had some element of compassion as shown in the flashback where he provides his DNA to Samus when she was only a small child which increased Samus's physical strength which helps with her fighting skills, and he has initially aided the Thoha with keeping the Metroids contained within the planet, before he changed his mind to wanting to use the creatures for his own gain, and offering Samus a spot in his assistance in his galactic conquest, despite not needing her alive at this point.
History[]
Before the games[]
Raven Beak is a high-ranking member of the Mawkin tribe, a warrior tribe of the Chozos. He became their leader through his great intellect and his unmatched combat skills. He actually contributed to the DNA that was infused into Samus when she was made into a Human-Chozo hybrid alongside Gray Voice. Her fighting prowess and enhanced physical abilities comes from the Mawkin DNA she received in the process. Due to this, he considers Samus to be his daughter.
Genocide of the Thoha tribe[]
The Thoha decided to colonize the planet SR388 at some point. There they discovered Aeion and started to power up some of their machines with it. Soon after they encountered the X-Parasites, which simply took over the body everything it encountered. The Thoha genetically engineered the Metroids to oppose the X as a perfect predator. The Metroids were designed with a failsafe that allowed the Thoha to control them. Despite this, the Metroids started to evolve after driving the X to near extinction and turned on the Thoha. They decided to seal the planet and destroy it afterwards. The Mawkins were sent there to help holding the Metroids back when the Thoha were flooding the planet with a really corrosive acid-like liquid. After the underground was sealed with said liquid, the Thoha met with Raven Beak and his army and they explained to him what happened and their plan to destroy the planet. Raven Beak then turned on them and slaughtered the last members of the Thoha tribe, with the exception of Quiet Robe, who was taken prisoner for his ability to control the Metroids. Raven Beak wanted to use him to control the Metroids as a biological weapon and take over the galaxy.
X outbreak[]
However, when the Mawkin were returning to their home planet of ZDR, one of the Mawkin soldiers revealed himself to be a X-Parasite undercover that followed them from SR388. Without any Metroids around to hunt them, the X-Parasite spread and decimated the Mawkin tribe, leaving only a few sane members, including Raven Beak, who managed to confine the outbreak to a small section of the planet. While he was dealing with this problem, the events of Metroid: Samus Returns were taking place and Samus broke the seal on SR388 and destroyed all of the Metroids, which prevented Raven Beak's plan. However, by a stroke of fate, Samus' own DNA ended up being the only place where he could find Metroid DNA due to the events of Super Metroid, Metroid: Other M, and Metroid Fusion. Raven Beak changed his plans into baiting the Galactic Federation into sending Samus to him by outright sending them footage of a live X-Parasite from his quarantine zone after Samus was convinced to have killed them all in Fusion. The Galactic Federation sent 7 E.M.M.I.s instead, but Raven Beak simply took them over, so Samus was sent after the E.M.M.Is went radio silent.
Awakening Samus' power[]
Raven Beak figures out that Samus' Thoha DNA is preventing her from awakening the Metroid abilities her Metroid DNA would grant her in theory. So he attacks her the moment she arrives and strip her of her powers. He decides to pit them against the E.M.M.I. Since they are DNA extracting robots, he has nothing to lose. If Samus awakens her Metroid powers, he has an ultimate warrior to clone into an undefeatable army, and if she isn't worthy, he can just take the DNA the E.M.M.I extracted from her corpse and revive an army of Metroids.
She manages to escape the E.M.M.Is and make her way to Quiet Robe, who saves her from an E.M.M.I. and explains to her the situation they are in and Raven Beak's plan for the Metroid DNA before being killed by a robotic Chozo Soldier as Raven Beak doesn't deem him necessary to his plan anymore. He then baits Samus into unleashing the X-Parasite on the planet, which creates even more trouble as they are determined to take out the last remaining Metroid in the galaxy. Samus eventually awakens her Metroid powers while fighting the remaining E.M.M.I.s and the X. This culminates in her partial awakening, during which she is incapacitated by the E.M.M.I.-07PB and is able to grab the E.M.M.I's lethal needle with her hands before absorbing its energy like a Metroid. Samus has now accomplished everything Raven Beak expected out of her and she heads towards his ship to take him out. There she has a conversation with Adam Malkovich, who reveals to her that her Thoha DNA was the only thing keeping her Metroid transformation at bay, but that she also has Mawkin DNA in her veins as her physical prowess shows. Since Metroids were designed to react violently to the Mawkin, her encounter with Raven Beak is what started her transformation in earnest. Then he invites her to join him and bring order to the galaxy. Samus realizes that she is not talking to Adam, but Raven Beak hidden behind a simulation. She shoots the computer to reveal that she is standing in front of Raven Beak sitting on his throne.
Disappointed by her defiance, Raven Beak tells her that she is his daughter since she was infused with his DNA as well when she was adopted by the Chozo. Samus refuses to join him and aid in his conquest, with Raven Beak expressing his disappointment before engaging her in combat. She fares way better against him this time, but she is unable to defeat him even with her partially awakened Metroid powers. Raven Beak restrains her and assures her that he has no need for her since he can now simply make an army out of her clones. As he prepares to finish her off, she is reminded of all the Chozos that perished at his hands, and in a burst of anger, she fully awakens her Metroid powers and turns into the Metroid Suit, which promptly begins to drain Raven Beak and his ship. The ship crashes, but both survive. As Raven Beak is ready to fight her to the death with the small amount of energy he still has, he is taken over by a passing X-Parasite, who turns him into a hulking amalgamate of the creatures Samus has taken out on ZDR, including Kraid and Raven Beak himself. Samus finally kills him with one final Hyper Beam that destroys the Core-X as well.
Battle[]
During his battle in Itorash, he has a total of 4 phases:
First Phase[]
Attacks[]
- Raven Beak shoots a large beam. This beam acts as a danger zone for Samus and takes over most parts of the arena. To avoid this attack, it is necessary to approach Raven Beak in order to protect yourself from the beam.
- Raven Beak hits Samus with slashes and kicks 3 times. He usually uses this attack after the large beam attack. To avoid this, Samus must jump over Raven Beak and walk away from him.
- Raven Beak shoots an energy ball that will follow Samus until it gets destroyed either by him or Samus.
- Raven Beak charges into Samus, striking her into the wall. To avoid this, Samus will need to jump over him.
- Raven Beak shoots a large beam. If Samus avoids this attack, she will be able to counter Raven Beak, making him invincible until he gets countered again.
Second Phase[]
In this second phase, Raven Beak has a pair of wings which makes him able to fly.
Attacks[]
- Raven Beak will aim at Samus with his arm cannon. After a short time, he will start to shoot her as the beam follows her.
- Raven Beak shoots a powerful beam.
- Raven Beak charges into Samus horizontally.
- Raven Beak charges into Samus downwards.
Third Phase[]
Most of the attacks of the third phase are taken from the first phase.
Attacks[]
- Raven Beak will quickly charge into Samus both vertically and horizontally, similar to the Shinespark.
- Raven Beak will summon a large energy ball that will shoot waves in many directions for a short period of time. This can be destroyed with a Power Bomb.
- Raven Beak will shoot a powerful beam.
This phase leads to a counterattack from Raven Beak, which, if performed correctly, will end this phase.
Final Phase[]
In this phase, Raven Beak gets infected by an X-Parasite, which turns him into an enormous monster. Samus will have to use the Hyper Beam from the Metroid Suit to stop him in a similar way to the Omega Cannon with E.M.M.I.
Trivia[]
- Given that the Metroid invasions and general crisis gained the attention of the Space Pirates as they were not destroyed by the Chozo, it is safe to say that Raven Beak was responsible for the majority of the events in previous titles that have occurred due to his killing off the Thoha before they could destroy SR388 to get rid of the Metroids and the X-Parasites.
