Puyo Puyo is a series of is a series of tile-matching video games created by Compile. Sega has owned the franchise since 1998, and the series began being developed by Sonic Team in 2001.

In 1993, Sega released Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine on the Sega Genesis. That game was later re-released for the Wii Virtual Console and compatible with the Wii U using the Wii Mode, and it was later available on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.

In 1995, Nintendo released Kirby's Avalanche on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. That game was later re-released for Virtual Console and Nintendo Switch Online.

In 2005, Sega granted Bandai to permission to release Kidō Gekidan Haro Ichiza: Haro no Puyo Puyo on the Game Boy Advance.

In 2017 and 2018, Sega had included a Puyo Puyo mini-game within Sonic Mania and Sonic Mania Plus.

Also, Satan was renamed Dark Prince several times in the Western localizations, due to obvious religious concerns, first being the arcade version of the 1992 instalment. Then, in the Neo Geo Pocket Color version of Puyo Pop, along with not only Satan itself getting renamed, but also the masked version of Satan, named Masked Satan, was renamed to Masked Prince in order to be consistent with Dark Prince's name. This was followed many times such as GBA Puyo Pop, Puyo Puyo Tetris and its sequel, and VS Puyo Puyo SUN Western localization.
