Punch-Out!! (JP) is a game that was originally released in the arcades, and had many remakes on other consoles such as the NES and the SNES. The game features a boxer fighting to win a championship after encountering six other boxers. This version wouldn't be re-released until 2018 as a part of Hamster's Arcade Archives series.
In this game, you assume the role of a green-haired boxer without a name or a background. Many consider this boxer to be Little Mac. In the arcade game, you can only see the back of your boxer. Your opponent will be right in front of the boxer. Because of this, as you fight the boxers, your boxer will be wire-framed for the purpose of seeing your opponent.
There are six boxers who are featured in this game:
The gameplay is simple. You must knock the other boxer down before time runs out. If a boxer gets knocked down three times before the end of the round, that counts as a Technical Knock-Out (TKO) in the game. This game came in 1984, so there isn't really a true ending to this game.
You just keep repeating the same boxers in the same order, with the exception of Kid Quick. You'll only fight Pizza Pasta twice before you see the last of him. Other than that, you keep fighting and increasing your score until you lose, much like how Donkey Kong and Galaga were.
The game was actually more popular than expected. It came out with an arcade sequel Super Punch-Out!! the very next year, with the same style of gameplay as this one. When the NES launched, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out made a huge impact, featuring Mike Tyson as the one you have to beat for the championship.
The game also had a spin-off featuring Mr. Dream as the last boxer rather than Tyson. For the SNES, Super Punch-Out!! comes out, bringing back some boxers that were in the arcades, but not in the consoles, like Piston Hurricane and the Bear Hugger. In October of 2008 Nintendo announced that Next Level Games (Super Mario Strikers, Mario Strikers Charged) would bring back the franchise starting with Punch-Out!! Wii for the Wii.
