Professor Samuel Oak(JP) is a Pokémon Professor in the Pokémon series, and the grandfather of Blue Oak. He lives and works at his research lab in Pallet Town in the Kanto region. According to Professor Elm, Oak specializes in the study of Pokémon and human relationships as a profession, focusing on the dynamics of human interaction with Pokémon and how they positively or negatively affect one another.
Appearances[]
Main Pokémon games[]
Oak from Gold and Silver.
Professor Oak gave Red/Leaf and Blue their First partner Pokémon so that they would start their journey as Pokémon Trainers. After the player brings back Oak's Parcel from Viridian City, the professor will show both children his new invention, the PokéDex and assigns them the task to complete its information, as he'd always wanted when he was young. Professor Oak was an old friend of the Elite Four member Agatha when young, but she began to see him as too soft and a fool when he quit his life of Pokémon training, and went to do research. In Pokémon Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, where he serves the same role for Chase/Elaine and Trace that he originally served for Red and Blue. He originally has two starter Pokémon to give to them, but after the player catches their own partner Pokémon, the third Pokémon goes unrevealed.
Three years later, during the events of Pokémon Gold and Silver and Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, Professor Oak becomes more of a celebrity because of his radio show with DJ Mary. At first, he didn't plan to accept, but Mary ended up convincing him. He first meets Ethan/Kris/Lyra at the house of Mr. Pokémon, and gives him/her the PokéDex. Much later in the game, when the player has acquired 16 badges from both Kanto and Johto, he grants the player access to Mt. Silver. Professor Oak has also been a long-time friend of Kurt, a Poké Ball expert, and of Professor Elm. In the remakes, he also gives the player the National Pokédex after they've entered the Hall of Fame, gives them HM08 (Rock Climb) once they've earned all 16 Badges, allows them to choose one of the Kanto starter Pokémon once they've beaten Red, and hands over the Jade Orb if the player has caught both Kyogre and Groudon at the Embedded Tower.
Professor Rowan is also a good friend of Oak's, who often visits the Sinnoh region. He has a house in Eterna City, and, when he meets Lucas and Dawn for the first time, he shows them the Pal Park/Ramanas Park, upgrades their PokéDex to become National, and gives them the PokéRadar. He also gives the player a letter which allows him/her to get to the Mythical Pokémon Shaymin. In Pokémon Platinum, after providing the Up-Grade, Professor Oak will talk about the Legendary birds and say that they have been sighted in Sinnoh. From this point Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres will be visible roaming on the map.
In Pokémon Sun and Moon and Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, the player can encounter his cousin, Samson Oak. He mentions his cousin from time to time.
Other Pokémon games[]
Super Smash Bros. series[]
Professor Oak appears in Super Smash Bros. Melee as a trophy, wearing his regular clothes from the anime.
Trophy descriptions[]
In the anime[]
Professor Oak appears semi-regularly in Pokémon the Series, where he gives Ash Ketchum useful information for his journey. In Pokémon 4Ever: Celebi: The Voice of the Forest, Oak appeared as a young boy, Sam. Ash befriended the young Oak, who, because he time-traveled from 40 years in the past, was around the same age as Ash. The revelation that Sam is Oak, while inferred thanks to disclosure of Oak's first name in Pokémon the Movie 2000: The Power of One, comes only at the end of the movie when Oak implicitly confirmed the connection through his knowledge of Sam's name despite Ash having never told him of it. Additionally, Tracey Sketchit discovered the sketchbook in which young Sam drew Pikachu sleeping with Celebi in Oak's closet.
Professor Oak appears as a major character in the Pokémon Origins miniseries, where he serves a similar role as in Pokémon Red and Blue. He assigned Red and Blue with the task of completing his dream of a complete Pokédex. Eventually, Red did manage to catch all 150 known Pokémon, but then realized that Mew was still out there, and decided to continue his effort in bringing Professor Oak's dream to a true completion.
Professor Oak appeared in Pokémon Evolutions. Green met him at his laboratory in Pallet Town, apologizing for having failed to complete the Pokédex. Professor Oak, however, revealed that other Pallet Town Trainers had been taking on the same project as well, and thanks to them, the Pokédex was now complete. Just then, he received a call from a colleague of his, who informed him of a new Pokémon made entirely of metal. However, when Professor Oak turned around to share the news with Green, Elaine, and Trace, he was surprised to see them having already left.
