Power Stars (JP) are collectible items that gives Mario access to more areas with their design similar to the Star.

Super Mario series

Super Mario 64 / Super Mario 64 DS

In Super Mario 64, there are 120 collectible Power Stars total, but the Giant Power Star at the end of the game is never counted like its remake. In Super Mario 64 DS, five Silver Stars form one Power Star once all are collected.

Super Mario Galaxy / Super Mario Galaxy 2

Power Stars now come in four different variations which can be used to power the Comet Observatory, with Rainbow Notes used to convert a Black Holes into a Power Star. Silver Stars return once again, but this time Mario won't lose them if he takes damage.

Super Mario 3D World

In Super Mario 3D World, Green Stars have the same function as Power Stars being used to unlock new levels.

Super Mario Odyssey

In Super Mario Odyssey, Power Stars appear exclusively in the Mushroom Kingdom, but are reffered to as Power Moons. When collected, a jingle is heard similar to collecting a Power Star in Super Mario 64.

Super Smash Bros. series

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, a Power Star appears as Rosalina's Final Smash which fires multiple stars at a rapid rate, but anyone caught in the center of the attack will take massive amounts of damage leading to a K.O after the explosion. The Power Star will continue to attack even if Rosalina is K.O'ed.
