PokemonTypes

All types in the Pokémon series as of X and Y.

Types are properties for Pokémon and their moves. As of Generation VI, there are 18 types, as listed below. The franchise started with 15, but the Dark and Steel types were introduced in Pokémon Gold and Silver and the Fairy type was introduced in Pokémon X and Y. A unique ??? type also existed from Generations II through IV. During Generation I, types were occasionally referred to as elements. The types are based on the concept of classical elements in popular culture. The Stelar-type from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is only exclusive to Terastal Phenomenon.

A Pokémon may have either one or two types: For instance, Charmander is a Fire-type, while Bulbasaur is both a Grass-type and a Poison-type. With the current 18-type system, there is a total of 324 possible ways to assign types to Pokémon, with 171 unique combinations, 162 of which have been used as of Generation IX. Similarly to Pokémon, Pokéstar Studios opponents also have types.

A move has exactly one type. The type of a damaging move typically defines which types of Pokémon it is super effective against, which types of Pokémon it is not very effective against, and which types of Pokémon it is completely ineffective against. (Uniquely, Flying Press is a Fighting-type move but has the type effectiveness of both a Fighting- and Flying-type move.) If the type of a move matches one of the types of the Pokémon using it, it gains a boost in power.

Most Gym Leaders and members of the Elite Four are designed to have a type-specific theme.

Special type interactions[]

  • Dark-type Pokémon are immune to moves that gain priority from the Ability Prankster.
  • Electric-type Pokémon cannot be Paralyzed.
  • Fire-type Pokémon cannot be Burned.
  • Flying-type Pokémon are not considered grounded, thus not affected by things such as Grassy Terrain and Spikes. If a Flying type uses the move Roost, it will lose the Flying typing for the rest of the turn.
  • Ghost-type Pokémon are immune to effects that prevent escape, and are guaranteed to flee from a wild battle.
  • Grass-type Pokémon are immune to the move Leech Seed, Spore and Powder moves, as well as the Ability Effect Spore.
  • Ground-type Pokémon cannot be Paralyzed by Electric-type moves, and don't take damage from the Sandstorm weather condition.
  • Ice-type Pokémon cannot be Frozen, are immune to the move Sheer Cold, and don't take damage from the Hail weather condition.
  • Poison-type Pokémon cannot be Poisoned, and will remove Toxic Spikes from their side if grounded, when switched in. If a Poison type uses the move Toxic, it won't miss.
  • Rock-type Pokémon gain a 50% Special Defense increase, and don't take damage from the Sandstorm weather condition.
  • Steel-type Pokémon cannot be Poisoned and don't take damage from the Sandstorm weather condition.
