PictoChat

A PictoChat image.

PictoChat is a program that is built in with the Nintendo DS, Nintendo DS Lite, Nintendo DSi, and Nintendo DSi XL. It allows digital communication with nearby DS users. On the bottom screen there is a keyboard and a blank space above it. Players may type in letters for the blank space and draw on it with the stylus, sending it to the top screen for other players to read. It also makes an appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as playable stages.

The DSi and DSi XL version is basically the same software, though color has now been included. Interestingly, when someone contacts someone else using a Nintendo DSi and an original Nintendo DS or DS Lite, the player using the Nintendo DSi can still send color images to those on the Nintendo DS or DS Lite.

PictoChat was developed by Redmond, Washington based Nintendo Software Technology.

The application was not included with the Nintendo 3DS. Instead it was replaced with a similar program called Swapnote.

Super Smash Bros.

A stage based on the PictoChat application appeared in the Wii video game Super Smash Bros. Brawl. In the game an invisible hand draws objects that the player can interact with.

A sequel stage called PictoChat 2 appears in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS with less interfering hazards

PictoChat 2 returns in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, while PictoChat didn't return.
