Pauline (known as Lady in Japan) is Mario's first love interest, she is from the original Donkey Kong (Game). She is one of the very few major damsels in distress who is not a princess but rather a person of non-royalty. Pauline is Miyamoto's first female character, as well as Nintendo's first female.

Except for a few cameos no more was seen of her since the original Donkey Kong game, other than remakes of the same game.

Left out

After that game, Pauline was replaced by Peach, and the characters, Mario & Donkey Kong, separated into separate franchises. However, in many Mario spin off games Donkey Kong either appears as a host or a playable character, but Pauline yet still hasn't been in a Mario spin off game.

Oh! She's back!

After 13 years missing of Donkey Kong '94(latest remake), Pauline made a new appearance on the game Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis, for the Nintendo DS. In the game, she plays the major role of damsel in distress once again. However in this game it is displayed as Mario and Pauline being friends rather than a couple. Yet in the story they both seem to show affection to each other.

Pauline has also made cameo appearances in Tetris DS, and her first game was released for the Virtual Console two months after Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis was released.

Other Media

Pauline makes a very small cameo in Nintendo Monopoly, and she appeared as a main character in the Saturday Supercade cartoon show but instead of being Mario's girlfriend she was his niece.

In the Super Mario Bros. movie it might be concluded that Daniella, Mario's girlfriend, is probably Pauline since Daniella is of no royalty status but is Mario's girlfriend.

Pauline also makes an appearance in Super Smash Brothers Brawl, she appears in her regular pixel form in her game's demonstration. It is also rumored of her having a sticker, but it is unknown if she has a trophy or not.
