Paper Mario: The Origami King (JP) (also called Paper Mario 6) is a Nintendo Switch game and the sixth game in the Paper Mario series. It was released worldwide on July 17, 2020. The game was first announced in a trailer released on May 14, 2020.

Gameplay[]

Unlike the two previous games in the series, Origami King is based in a linear open world, similar to Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. Combat in the game is based on a ring system, where enemies are on rings of tiles, with Mario in the center. Before fighting, the player can turn the rings or move the columns, using these to arrange the enemies in a pattern. After this Mario attacks using the arrangement from before. If four enemies that Mario can jump on are in a row, the player should arrange them in a line of four. If not, they should be arrange the enemies in a 2x2 pattern so Mario can hit them with his hammer.

There are no level systems in the game, though there are different weapons Mario can use. There are also attacks Mario can only use during boss fights, such as the 1,000-fold Arms.

Plot[]

The story follows Mario as he teams up with an origami being named Olivia and sets out on a journey to prevent the Mushroom Kingdom's residents from all being transformed into origami by Olivia's evil older brother, King Olly. To do so, Mario must free Princess Peach's castle from five decorative streamers that extend across the kingdom to both save her and the other residents who have already been turned into origami, as well as reach King Olly to stop him since he's residing there.

Development[]

Plans for a Switch Paper Mario game were leaked in early 2020. According to Eurogamer, Nintendo planned to reveal the game at E3 2020 as part of a presentation celebrating the Super Mario series' 35th anniversary, but had to change plans after the convention was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[6]The Origami King was announced via a trailer on May 14, 2020, and was released on July 17, 2020.[7]

Reception[]

When the game was released, it received generally favorable reviews, scoring 80 out of 100 on Metacritic based 116 critic reviews. Most aspects of it were well-received and praised, such as the writing, design, characters, music and mechanics, but it still drew some division for continuing the trend of straying from the series' RPG roots and its combat system, which some people didn't find rewarding or engaging.

Sales[]

By December 2020, the game had sold 3.05 million copies, becoming the fastest-selling game in the series. As of the end of March 2021, the game has sold 3.12 million units.
