Octolings are elite Octarian fighters that are the octopus equivalent to an Inkling. In Splatoon they only appear in Hero Mode, but in Splatoon 2 some appear also outside of the mode such as Marina who serves as one of the news announcer of the game and Agent 8 who is the protagonist of the Octo Expansion.

Personality and traits[]

Like Inklings they have the ability to transform, but into octopuses. Octolings can switch between octopus and humanoid form at will. They make up an elite corps of the Octarian forces, and are heavily armed with bombs and ink guns.

It appears that only female Octolings are in Hero Mode, but DJ Octavio may be an Octarian with the ability to transform between two forms at will. Octolings may have been the main opponent of the Inklings in the Great Turf War.

Octolings appear to have the most aggressive AI when compared to other Octarians, and can pull off any move the player can. The Octolings like the Inklings can have a large variety of tentacles and Ink colors but the ones that serves as enemies either have red tentacles or black tentacles.

These elite Octolings with black tentacles and seaweed on the sides are elite sildiers. It should be noted that in the later stages of Hero Mode, these upgraded versions of Octolings may appear and are harder to splat than regular Octolings.

However, male Octolings exist. In one of the Sunken Scrolls, there appears to be a humanoid form male Octarian and Cap'n Cuttlefish. Judging by the hat and the plant under the Octarian's arm, it could be a humanoid DJ Octavio. They also appear in the Octo Expansion where the player can choose to play as a male Octoling if they want but despite this, every enemy Octoling in this mode will still be female.

The Commander Tartar has also turned many Octolings into Sanitized Octolings, which destroy their free will and ability to have emotions. These decolored Octolings are found in the Deepsea Metro and serves as Tartar's slaves and personal army.

Official Descriptions[]

Splatoon Prima guide[]

"Exhibiting the same capabilities as Inklings, Octolings are some of the most dangerous enemies you'll encounter. They're equipped with a weapon similar to your Hero Shot as well as Splat Bombs. Furthermore, they can swim and hide in their own ink, just like you. The standard Octolings are dangerous enough, but the Elite Octolings (with seaweed growing out of their headsic) are even more durable, capable of taking more damage. When possible, seek the high ground when confronting Octolings, firing down on them with your Hero Shot. If you can't splat them, limit their mobility by covering the ground with your ink. If they get stuck in your ink, use Splat Bombs to take them out before they can submerge in their own ink and escape."
