Nintendo R&D2 was one of Nintendo's three original development groups. Led by Masayuki Uemura, the group focused on creating hardware in it's early years. They would often collaborate with Nintendo R&D1 on arcade games and the Game & Watch series. They were also responsible with porting many of Nintendo's popular arcade games to the Nintendo Entertainment System.

Late in the Game Boy Color's life cycle, R&D2 was put in charge of porting old games to the handheld. They continued with this when the Game Boy Advance came out.

In 2005, R&D2 was dissolved. The game development section was absorbed into Nintendo EAD while the hardware section went to Nintendo T&D. Most of the team from R&D2 came together to form the faction known as Nintendo EAD4, and went on to develop hit games such as both New Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Mario 64 DS, Yoshi Touch & Go, the Big Brain Academy series, and entries in the Pikmin series.
