Nintendo Comics System was an imprint of comic books published by Valiant Comics in 1990 and 1991, produced as a result of a licensing deal with Nintendo. The Nintendo Comics System stories featured a variety of Nintendo properties, such as Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, and Metroid.[1]
The Super Mario Bros. comic series was based on the Nintendo Entertainment System's three Super Mario games - Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, and Super Mario Bros. 3; one of the last issues also featured a story directly adapting Dr. Mario. Aside from several returning characters, the Super Mario Bros. comic series also has unique ones such as Stanley the Talking Fish, Wooster, and Dirk Drain-Head.
The Game Boy comic series supposedly focuses on the Game Boy in general, although it has only four issues, all specifically focused on Super Mario Land and featuring Tatanga as the main antagonist.
The Legend of Zelda followed a similar plot to the cartoon that was also running at the time.
The Captain N: The Game Master comics followed the same general plot as the cartoon, though since Valiant had only secured the license for Nintendo properties, none of the characters originating from Mega Man or Castlevania were present, with no explanation given for their absence (although the letters column in Super Mario Bros. #4 claimed that Mega Man would be appearing in the book "very soon"). Thus, Samus Aran, who was oddly absent from the cartoon, became a member of the N Team, while Mother Brain had Uranos (another Kid Icarus enemy) among her henchmen. The comic wouldn't get to do a crossover with The Legend of Zelda like the cartoon did in its second season, though one short had Kevin mentioning a warp that can lead to Hyrule, teasing the possibility of a crossover comic. A single Metroid comic set in the Captain N continuity also appeared in one issue.
Three stories based on Punch-Out were also printed, expanding on Little Mac's matches with Piston Honda and Super Macho Man.
In Sweden, these comics were published in Nintendomagasinet.
