Pokemon HeartGold (NA)

Pokémon HeartGold boxart

Much like Pokémon Gold & Pokémon Silver, Professor Oak introduces the game and asks if your a boy or girl and your name. A lot has also changed: The Infared is in the cartridge itself so it can mate up with the Pokéwalker; The time you start the game changes the opening words of the game; All graphics are updated; some of the action has changed; there are shards and no berries at the start of the game, apricorns are found first in this game.

Start of Game

You wake up late and then read an email on your PC. Go downstairs and your mother tells you Professor Elm is looking for you and gives you your stuff (Trainer card and such). Then you can finally save the game.

Professor Elm's Lab

Head over to Professor Elm's Lab. On the way you'll run into your friend (Ethan/Lyra), then when you get to the lab Professor Elm will get an email from Mr. Pokémon and give you your choice of starter Pokémon: Cyndaquil, Totodile or Chikorita. You pick one. He'll send you to Mr. Pokémon's but first you'll run into your friend again and they'll suggest you show your Pokémon to your mother. Go home and you'll get your Pokégear and then as you leave town (left/east) Professor Elm will give you his number and off you go on your adventure. You'll notice in this version you have a friend named Ethan or Lyra of the opposite sex of your character and a rival of the same sex unlike the original and a Pokémon walks with you all the time. To find your way around the map follows (really Crystal Map, will modify as needed in time).

Cherrygrove City

You'll have to battle Pokémon as you head east to Cherrygrove, you'll have 5 potions to use but aren't likely to need that many as the Pokémon on the way are pretty weak. If you come apon the Mountian Route you've gone too far North, just head east and you'll see an Apricorn Tree and a trainer waiting for night Pokémon, pass them by for now and keep going east past the Route 29 sign, talk to the old man (Guide Gent) who will show you around and give you running shoes. You can hold the B to run, but you can also select the shoes Icon from the lower right of the touch screen to run all the time (till you deselect it). Then heal up and head out Route 30, Gent will appear and give your Pokégear a map. This is a good place to save the game, then head north up route 30. Enter the first house and get an Apricorn Box so you can start saving Apricorns to make Pokéballs, then get the Grn Apricorn just outside his door. Head west, then north through the grass, go to the left to get the Antidote then head north west to Mr. Pokémon's house.

Mr. Pokémon's house

Get the Pnk Apricorn next to Mr. Pokémon's house and enter and get the Mystery Egg, also see Professor Oak and get a Pokédex. You'll get a call from Professor Elm and he'll tell you to get back quickly, but heal up at Cherrygrove (and likely save the game) as you'll have to fight your rival just as you leave Cherrygrove. It's good to pick the Apricorns and save them even though you haven't met Kurt yet as they can be turned in for money at the Pokémarts.

Professor Elm's Lab again

You get back as the Police are getting the facts and your friend helps you through that. You give your red-haired rival a name at this point. Professor Elm suggests you take the Gym Challenge and tells you to go see your Mom first. She offers to handle some of your money. On heading out of New Bark Town your friend gives you the Pokéball info and five Pokéballs. You head back up route 30 catching new Pokémon and battling trainers as you go. Once you have a few Pokémon you can now trade at the Pokémon Centers upstairs, the Pokédex and several Pokémon are the only requirements. This can give you all the easy to get Pokémon from various generations as you give out the easy to get ones from HeartGold.

Route 30

Head left of Mr. Pokémon's house and start battling trainers and talking to the people you meet along the way. It works best to save the game before you battle so you can always try again. At times you have to jump the hedges to get back to Cherrygrove's Pokémon Center to heal. There is also a computer there and as you win you get money and can buy more poké balls at Cherrygrove's Poké Mart. You can also trade Pokémon with others upstairs at the Pokémon Center. You also want to pick any Apricorns along the way. Apricorns grow every day, so you can go pick them on a daily basis and sell them at the Pokémart so you can buy things . There is also an antidote (looks like a poké ball) just above the Apricorn man's house. It's used to heal a poisoned pokémon. The first of the trainer's you battle is Joey with a Level 4 Rattata (48 EXP) and he'll give you his phone number and call for rematches. By this time you should have a ground, flying, grass, water and or fire type. When your party gets weak, jump back to Cherrygrove's pokémon center to heal up (and likely save the game). Building your party toward level 10 for the gym battle at Violet City. You'll also want to buy some poké balls at the poké mart back in Cherrygrove. You'll battle Mikey with a Level 2 Pidgey (24 EXP) and a Level 4 Rattata (48 EXP). Last is Don with two Level 3 Caterpie (33 EXP) and when you come to the top you've reached Route 31 (have to go through the tall grass).

Route 31

The dark cave you see in the upper left is a dead end for now, so don't bother with that (you need flash to light it up). You can get a Geodude or Zubat there if you want now. Get the items (Potion by cave and Blk Apricorn by the sleepy trainer) then down to battle Bug Catcher Wade who has three Level 2 Caterpie and one Level 3 Weedle, then get his phone number for berries from him later and get the poké ball below him. At night this is a good place to get a Poliwag which will come in handy later in caves. There are also Bellsprout here. After that, left, and up to head left through a house that connects you to Violet City. You'll run into your friend and get the Vs. Recorder. Then Heal at the poké center. You'll see someone saying Shard de Berry, that trades Shards for three Berries (yah). If you have any Shards trade them for berries (Shards have little other use).

Violet City

After healing, you'll need awakening (Voilet city's poké mart at $250 each) as you pass the gym go up the road to the right of it to reach the Sprout Tower to the north. There you'll find the flash when you finish all the levels of the tower. Flash is need for the dark cave and you can possibly get a Bellsprout and Rattata if you haven't got one. You'll likely have to go back to the poké center for healing every few levels. Also you'll find that to fight Gastly, you'll have to use special moves, Poliwag's water, Spinarak's poison, or a Grass pokémon's Razor leaf will work (tackle won't) and Gastly will put your pokémon to sleep so all pokémon with special moves will need awakening with spare awakening on hand if you can afford it. You'll also be able to capture a Gastly or Haunter while there. Once you have a Rattata or Onix you should go west (through the connecting house) and talk to the people there, you will get HM06 Rock Smash and then teach it to Rattata and or Onix giving them special moves to fight Ghost Pokémon with. On Thursday you will also get a TM there.

Sprout Tower

It's time to learn some strategy: bird pokémon are best at sprout tower's grass types. Falkner's bird Pokémon are also strong against Grass and Bug types, so it's best to built up your bird types (Pidgey & Hoothoot) now till they are about level 10 for the Gym battles. In the battles up the tower you'll face: Sage Nico, Sage Chow, and Sage Edmond all with three Level 3 Bellsprout (54 EXP; See the pattern of threes). The strategy is to lead with weak types vs Bellsprout and then switch in Pidgey and Hoothoot to knock them out. This way you build up your party and when Pidgey reaches level 9 it learns Gust and you've got it made vs grass types like Bellsprout. They can't stand against that. You can climb down and go back to the pokémon center to heal, then it's on to Sage Jin and Sage Neal both with Level 6 Bellsprout (108 EXP). Sage Troy is up next with Level 7 Bellsprout (126 EXP) and Level 7 Hoothoot (106 EXP). The leader of the Sage's is Sage Li with Level 7 Bellsprout (126 EXP), Level 10 Hoothoot (122 EXP), and Level 7 Bellsprout (126 EXP). Beating him wins you Flash HM05, but you can't use it out of battle without the Gym badge so it's finally time to heal up and then hit the Violet City Gym. Another bit of strategy is to return most grass and bug types to the computer and get at least one Rattata and Onix. Rattata can be found in Sprout Tower and Geodude in the dark cave back where Routes 30 and 31 meet. Vine Whip is effective against Geodude so you should keep a Bellsprout out to get your Geodude. You can see enough to get one in the cave and likely a Zubat while your at it. Give them HM06 Rock Smash as noted above and build them up to level 8 for the gym battle. That should be enough to help you through to your Gym Badge. If not there are also Mareep in the grassy patch just below the Ylw Apricorn on Route 32 which you can get and train up to Level 10 (Flying are weak to Electric types).

Violet City Gym

Violet City Gym is run by gym leader Falkner and is all about bird pokémon. Looks like this is one of the changes from old Silver, you are lifted up to the rafters and walk along them. As before first you have to get through the other gym trainers, that will be easy after the Sprout Tower. It will build up your pokémon so you can defeat Falkner and win the badge and full use of Flash TM70. First up is Bird Keeper Abe with a Level 9 Spearow (111 EXP), remember you can go back to the Poké Center to heal. Next up is Bird Keeper Rod with two Level 7 Pidgey (82 EXP). Gym leader Falkner is tough and has a Level 7 Pidgey (82 EXP) and Level 9 Pidgeotto (217 EXP). When You win you get Zephyr Badge, $900, & TM31 (Mud Slap). After the battle you get a call from Professor Elm to talk to his assistant at the Pokémon center in Voilet City. You need to heal from the Gym battle so heal and make room in your party at the computer by depositing a pokémon then talk to Elm's assistant and get the egg back to raise. Route 36 is a bust for now (a 'tree' blocks the way), so just head down between the Gym and PokéMart to route 32 or try the Ruins of Alph just below Route 36. Do talk to the people there if you haven't and get HM06 Rock Smash before you move on.

Ruins of Alph

Several puzzles to solve to start getting Unown Pokémon remember to have Pokéballs on hand.

Route 32

This is a long route through a bunch of trainers so, as stated above, make sure you healed up and have as many berries and such as you can get. At the top of the route you'll find Ylw Apricorn. Talk to the first guy you see and you'll get a Miracle Seed which will increase the power of Grass moves by 10%. Give it to your lead Grass Pokémon. Then go down till you run into Youngster Albert with his Level 6 Rattata (72 EXP) and Level 8 Zubat (91 EXP) and see if you can knock'em out with your lead Grass Pokémon. You'll also find Wooper and Mareep along the route. The Mareep are in the grassy patch just below the Ylw Apricorn. Next you'll run into Gordon if you stay to the Stairs to the left or the fishermen if you go down the stairs to the right. Gordon has a Wooper and a Bellsprout. The fisherman has a level 10 Goldeen. After this someone tries to sell you a slowpoke tail for a high price (say No).

Union Cave

First Heal up at the Poké Center just above the entrance to Union Cave. Talk to the fisherman in the Poké Center to get Old Rod (a fishing poll) so you can collect some water pokémon you couldn't get otherwise. Next, before the Cave is Bird Keeper Peter with two Level 6 Pidgey and a Level 8 Spearow. You should be able to fight them off pretty easily. Then you need a Pokémon with rock smash, go down and smash the rock below and to the right of Peter and get Shell Bell to give your lead Pokémon (should be water type for the Cave) to help keep it's power up. Go back and heal up at the Pokémon Center and it might be a good time to go back and do a little fishing. You can easily catch a Magikarp, build up any weak Pokémon battling them and get a Tentacool. After that heal up and enter the cave, Head North (up) and battle the Geodudes on the way and capture one. Water types (Wooper from this area) are best on Geodudes but Vine Whip or hyper fang will work too. The trainer (Hiker Daniel) will have a Level 11 Onix (252 EXP) so it will be a battle. Then keep a strong Pokémon against geodude in the front as the next trainer has three of them: Level 4 Geodude (82 EXP); Level 6 Geodude (109 EXP); and Level 8 Geodude (147 EXP). Lastly you'll fight two Firebreathers: Bill with two Level 6 Koffing (145 EXP), then Ray with Level 9 Vulpix (121 EXP). Go right, then down to the cave exit to Route 33.

Route 33

As you exit Union Cave your on Route 33 and right in front of you are two apricorns: Pnk Apricorn and Blk Apricorn, pick them. You will soon be able to get them turned into Poké balls. Head east (right) toward town and the slowpoke well. You'll see two Apricorn trees just out of the Cave and it will be raining. You'll find they are Blk & Pnk Apricorns so pick them and add them to the collection. Next head right and you'll pass Hiker Anthony he'll battle you with a Level 11 Geodude (200 EXP) and a Level 11 Machop (207 EXP; on your right as you head to slowpoke well), then on to Azalea Town to heal at the Pokémon center. You can also go back to the route to collect some more Pokémon and each day another pair of Apricorns will appear on the trees. Kurt will make them into Heavy Balls and Love Balls (after you battle Team Rocket). Found on Route 33:

Rattata Spearow

Zubat Hoppip

Azalea Town

Azalea Town has two important points of interest: Slowpoke Well and Kurt's House. Kurt, a Poké Ball smith, can make each Apricorn into a different kind of Poké Ball which is unavailable elsewhere in the Pokémon world. First you'll have to help him with Team Rocket at the Slowpoke Well. It also has the normal Gym, Poké Mart and Poké Center which is likely the first place to go after all those battles. You likely want to catch a Spearow in the grass patch by the Apricorn trees (across from the Cave), as it will be great against Bugsy's (Gym Leader) Bug Pokémon.

Slowpoke Well

As you first pass Slowpoke Well a Team Rocket member will block the way, but after going to Kurt's house He'll tell you to meet him at the well and you can enter, but will have to fight off team rocket. First up will be a Rocket Grunt (M) with two Level 9 Rattata (109 EXP), then Rocket Grunt (F) with Level 9 Zubat (103 EXP) and Level 11 Ekans (145 EXP) and there's a super potion just to her left to get after that. Then two more Rocket Grunt (M), first with a Level 7 Rattata (85 EXP) and two Level 9 Zubat (103 EXP), and the final one (leader of this group) has just one Level 14 Koffing (342 EXP). After doing that Kurt will have you meet him back at his house and give you a Poké Ball. Lastly offer to make more Poké Balls for you. Pick the WHT Apricorn from behind his house when you get a chance and have him make them into Poké Balls (Fast Balls).

Azalea Gym

If you have some Berries and give them to all you Pokémon, let them build up a bit then start in on the trainers at the Azalea Gym (Spearow in the lead works well). It's good to have some antidotes in your bag as Bug Pokémon include posion types. First up is the center Spinarak and Bug Catcher Al with a Level 12 Caterpie and L12 Weedle. Then the far left Spinarak brings you to Bug Catcher Benny with a Level 7 Weedle, L9 Kakuna, and finally L12 Beedrill. There's a switch past Benny and to the right, if you leave it alone the Spinarak brings you to Twins Amy & Mimi with Level 10 Spinarak (115 EXP) and Level 10 Ledyba (115 EXP) both with posion sting. This is the first two on two battle, your first two Pokémon will battle Ledyba and Spinarak. Flip the switch to the right of them to get to another switch so you can get to the Gym Leader Bugsy. Your first Pokémon is likely to go down to U-Turn first, but a strong (L16?) Geodude will have Rock Throw and will take out all three: a Level 15 Metapod (215 EXP), Level 15 Kakuna (213 EXP), and Level 17 Scyther (640 EXP) which is pretty strong plus he uses U-Turn and potions and such making it a very hard battle. Now you have to flip the switches back to get out. After that heal up because on your way out of town you'll battle your rival with Level 12 Gastly (240 EXP), Level 16 Starter (489 EXP), Level 14 Zubat (162 EXP). You'll find it easier if you bring up some strong Pokémon against your rival's starter, for example if he has Chikorita use Fire Pokémon which are useful for Chikorita and Zubat. You can generally get them from the Pokéwalker and bring them up to level 13 or better. Gastly can be knocked out with a Rattata with Bite as it's a dark move.

Ilex Forest

In Ilex forrest you must speak to a man beside a small tree. he will tell you that a Farfetche'd is missing. go right and the Farfetche'd will hear you crack a branch (noted it the game, you'll see the sticks on the ground), so go around the circle counter clockwise to catch the Farfetche'd . You'll instantly appear at the man and he'll tell you there's another Farfetche'd, so off you go, this one will be more of a puzzle to catch because of all the sticks on the ground. Drive it forward one move then go around the small circle counter clockwise and avoid the sticks just above the Farfetche'd and you'll catch it. Now you'll instantly appear at the man again and his Boss will show up and give you HM01 CUT and offer you an apprenticeship for 10 years. You can't reply to him so just teach a Pokémon cut and cut down the little tree above and follow the path to up past the Shrine to get out of the forrest.

Route 34

Route 34 starts off with Youngster Samuel with a Level 7 Rattata, Level 10 Sandshrew and two Level 8 Spearow. Pokéfan Brandon with Mareep. Younster Ian with L10 Mankey and a Digglett. Mother calls a few times saying she bought things and to pick them up at the Department Store. Lastly there is Camper Todd with a Level 14 Psyduck, you can bypass Todd by staying to the left of the path. Next you'll run into your Friend and get introduced to the Daycare, registering all their phone numbers.

Goldenrod City

Next up to the Pokémon Center and heal up. Team rocket is blocking the Radio Tower, so the underground is the next group of trainers, up left, down right from the Pokémon Center is the underground. First you run into you friend again who gives you the Fashion Case, then Super Nerd Eric with two Level 11 Grimers. Pokémanic Issac with a Level 12 Lickitung, you pass some vendors and then Supernerd Teru two Level 7 Magnemite, Level 9 Magnemite, and a Voltorb, last up is Pokémanic Donald with two Level 11 Slowpoke.

Route 35 & National Park

Route 35 is mostly a line-up of trainers to battle, but after the first one is a photographer who takes your picture with your current team. On first getting to the Park enterence they are usually not up and running, you have to go through the grass to the right, battle a couple of trainers and go in the other door.
