The Big Eight

The big eight is a term made by fans indicating the eight most popular characters in the Mario series. The following is a monthly section that will give info on what roles the characters will be playing in upcoming, or recently released video games.

  • Mario - Mario is getting ready to appear in a bunch of games, the most notable being Super Mario Galaxy and Super Paper Mario, both for the Wii. He is also staring in Mario Party 8, Mario Strikers Charged, Mario Kart Arcade GP 2, and Itadaki Street DS.
  • Luigi - So far, Luigi is set to appear in all of the above games except Super Mario Galaxy.
  • Princess Peach - Peach is apparently going to appear in every known upcoming Mario game.
  • Yoshi - Currently, Yoshi is not confirmed to appear in too many upcoming games (though this could obviously change). However, he is going to appear in "Mario Party 8, Mario Kart Arcade GP 2, and Itadaki Street DS. It should also be noted that in the new Galaxy video, a giant Yoshi egg was spotted in orbit.
  • Bowser - Bowser will be appearing in every game that Luigi will appear in. It is very probable that Bowser will appear in Galaxy.
  • Donkey Kong - The giant ape is set to appear in Mario Party 8, Mario Strikers Charged, Mario Kart Arcade GP, DK King of Swing DS, and DK Bongo Blast.
  • Toad - Toad is probably going to appear in all upcoming Mario games.
  • Wario - It is known that Wario will be appearing in Mario Party 8, Mario Strikers Charged, and Mario Kart Arcade GP 2. He recently stared in both Wario Master of Disguise and WarioWare: Smooth Moves.
New Mario games on the Virtual Console

In the past few months, quite a few classic Mario games were released on the Virtual Console. Quite possibly the most notable was the release of Super Mario World which was released on the SNES over 10 years ago. Mario Kart 64 is considered by many fans, including Nintendo Power, to be the best Mario Kart game ever to be released. NES titles cost 500 points, SNES titles cost 800 points, and Nintendo 64 titles cost 1,000 points. Recently in Japan, Yoshi was released on the Virtual Console.

Upcoming games include Dr. Mario, Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. 3 (all NES), and Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES).

Mario game sales:

New Super Mario Bros. continues to sell exceedingly well, currently being the 12th best selling video game of all time, surpassing gaming hits Halo, Halo 2, all Mario Kart games, Super Smash Bros. Melee, and others. Other games that are selling quite well are Yoshi's Island DS which was number one in Japan and WarioWare: Smooth Moves. Expect Wario: Master of Disguise to sell pretty good once the sales charts come in soon.

Super Mario Bros. strategy:
For the next four months, we will feature a strategy for every level in the last world of Super Mario Bros. on the NES. This will also include a map as well. In this issue, we will take a look at 8-1, and give you tips and tricks that will surely help you out!

SMB8-1

At the beginning of this level, watch out for the Buzzy Beetle. It would also help out if you would jump on the enemy, then kick his shell at the four oncoming Goombas (watch out though when it hits the pipe and comes back). After this wait for the Piranha Plant to go down, then jump over his pipe and dodge the two Koopa Troopas. Now just keep your finger on the B button, and run over the gaps. At the end of the gaps, jump over the green Koopa Troopa. There are a few Goombas that you can kill for some points, and then another pipe with a Piranha Plant inside.

SMB8-1-2

Once the Piranha Plant goes into his pipe, jump on top. Wait until the Buzzy Beetle moves a bit so you can jump down. In the box is a Mushroom (or a fire flower if you're already giant), however, the Buzzy Beetle will make it tricky to nab, so chose whether or not you want it. After this is there are five pipes with Piranha Plants in a row. After the third one are three Goombas, and after the fourth one there are a whopping five green Koopa Troopas. Jump over the final pipe and either kill or dodge the three Goombas. Jump on the four stacked blocks, and then onto the line of bricks so you can get past the para koopa troopa without fighting him.

SMB8-1-3

Once you jump off the bricks, you'll notice that there's another gap area that you can dash across. However, there are now Para Koopa Troopas, so be warned, and take it easy. After that hit the third brick block to obtain a super star, allowing you to breeze through the up and coming enemies.

SMB8-1-4

Jump over the three pipes with Piranha Plants, pass on the buzzy beetle and five Goombas, go up the steps, and pass yet another Buzzy Beetle right below it. Now, be careful while jumping these two rather large gaps, making sure not to fall in between them. After this, jump over the trapped Koopa Troopa.

SMB8-1-5

This part is pretty hard - try to jump the very large gap and land on the single block, then do so again to get to the other side. Pass by the four Koopas, jump over the two pipes with Piranha Plants, jump up on the mini steps (with gaps in between each one) and finish off the level.

New Game screen shots
While at GDC 2007, Nintendo revealed new screen shots for some of their upcoming games, including the highly anticipated video game Super Mario Galaxy.

Partners of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
This is a full list of all the partners in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, and which ones have an advantage over the others. I'll also give scores for each one, based on my opinion.

Goombella Koops Flurrie Yoshi Vivian Admiral Bobbery Ms. Mowz
File:Goombella2.jpg File:Koops2.jpg Flurrie File:PaperYoshi.jpg File:Vivian1.jpg Bobbery File:MsMowz1.jpg
Goombella is a character you should use quite a bit as she has her tattle ability, which will give all the beef on the enemy. You'll Probably not use Koops very much, as there are better partners. Though his power shell attack does come in handy. Flurrie is an interesting spirit that has the ability to shoot huge gusts of wind that will, sometimes, blow away all enemies. Yoshi, at least in my opinion, is the best partner in the group. Not only are his attacks powerful, but hes useful out of battle too. Vivian will come in handy in the game, especially with her ability to hide Mario and her underground. Admiral Bobbery's later attacks can be very powerful, but will deplete much of your flower power. Ms. Mowz is an optional character. Her attacks aren't that great, and I really wouldn't recommend her to anyone.

YoshiIslandDSAfterThoughts

I'm sure that many fans were frightened when Nintendo revealed that Artoon, developer of Yoshi's Topsy Turvy, was currently making the video game Yoshi's Island DS. Any one whom has played Topsy Turvy knows that, well, it really wasn't that great of a game in terms of quality and gameplay. Though when the game was released, mostly everyone enjoyed the game, and knew that Artoon had done a great job, unlike almost all of their earlier projects. About five or so months have passed since the release of the game in America, and I'm glad to say that it is Possibly better that the first game in the series, which is one of my favorites. Instead of having the usual Baby Mario, Artoon went in an interesting route and added four new babies, each one with his or her special ability. My personal favorite out of the bunch has to be Baby Donkey Kong, as he is filled with power that can destroy enemies very quickly. After beating the game, my afterthoughts is this - Quite possibly the best Yoshi platformer ever released, and one of my favorite Nintendo DS games to date. I'm am also glad to say that the game, which was released in Japan a couple weeks ago, is selling very well on the number one spot.

2006 year in review

2006 was a pretty big year for Mario and cast on the Nintendo DS handheld console. The plumber stared in a total of five Nintendo DS games, not including his major appearance in Tetris DS. First off was Super Princess Peach, that, rather than Mario stared the usual princess-in-distress. In the game, rather than Peach getting kidnapped, Mario did, leaving Peach to go out and rescue him. In New Super Mario Bros., the two brothers went back to their roots and had a brilliant new side scrolling adventure. Mario Hoops 3-on-3 introduced the basketball sport to the cast, where they also met famous Final Fantasy characters. In Mario Vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis Donkey Kong kidnapped Pauline, where Mario would then have to send in his mini-marios to go in and save her. Finally, Yoshi's Island DS was released, where Yoshi and baby versions of all our favorite characters had to save the island.

MarioBosses

This section is a monthly look at all of the bosses of the Mario series. Whether it be from Paper Mario or Super Mario Sunshine, we'll cover them all right here. Each month we will feature one boss from the Mario series, and why he/she totally rocks at being a boss!

This month's boss is...
Petey Piranha

Petey Piranha has become quite popular ever since his boss appearance in Super Mario Sunshine for the Gamecube. In the first boss fight, Mario was pit up against the large walking Piranha Plant, and had to fill his belly with water until he could harm him. Once his belly was full, he would tip over, thus letting Mario ground pound him. If Mario was able to do this three times, the boss would (oddly) melt. However, the Piranha Plant some how regenerated and grew wings, making Mario (whose on ground) fight the enemy in the air. After Petey's second defeat, he would no longer appear in the game. However, Petey fans rejoiced when they learned that the boss was set to appear in a few spin-off games including Mario Pinball Land, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Mario Power Tennis, Mario Superstar Baseball, and Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour.

Though of course, spin-offs weren't enough to satisfy the fans, so they made him a boss in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, where the plant gobbled up Princess Peach whole! The brothers and their baby counterparts then had to defeat the boss so that they could save the princess. Next he appeared once again in the DS video game Super Princess Peach and in New Super Mario Bros., where he would appear in the ice world.

Who knows what the future holds for this boss. One thing is almost certain though - He will probably once again try to foil the brothers' plans and sadly (for him atleast) be defeated by Mario and Luigi!

Donkey Kong Monthly
Donkey Kong Monthly

This is a monthly section dedicated to everyone's favorite ape - Donkey Kong. This will list all of the new information on upcoming games such as Donkey Kong Bongo Blast and DK King of Swing DS, and will also give info on past classic Donkey Kong games as well.

Donkey Kong Bongo Blast

Donkey Kong Bongo Blast was originally a Nintendo GameCube video game that was merged over to the Wii in late 2006. It features popular characters such as Diddy Kong, King K. Rool, Dixie Kong, and of course Donkey Kong. Also expect the game to use the Bongo controllers that were popular when Donkey Konga and Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat were released.

DK: King of Swing DS

This is a sequel to 2005's GBA game DK King of Swing. The game is almost identical to the first game, though the gameplay will span over two screens, similar to last year's Yoshi's Island DS. Fans of Clu Clu Land will also enjoy the game, as it was inspired by the NES classic.
