NieR:Automata The End of YoRHa Edition is the fifth game in the Drakengard franchise and a direct sequel to the events of NieR:Replicant. It is an action RPG that also heavily features shoot 'em up sections of gameplay. The game takes place in the year 11945 and follows the struggles of two androids named 2B and 9S to protect humanity's future against the endless hordes of machines created by alien invaders. It was developped by staff from both Square Enix and PlatinumGames. Square Enix is also the publisher of the game. The "The End of YoRHa Edition" is the name of the 2022 Nintendo Switch version of the game, it contains all previous DLC from older versions alongside new exclusive costumes.

Story[]

The game follows the struggles of two androids named 2B and 9S following their meeting on a military opperation against the machines in the prologue of the game. The world of NieR:Automata is only populated by artificial life forms. Humans escaped to the moon following the events of NieR:Replicant and the following alien invasion. The Andoids are designed to be human-like in almost every way and worship their unseen creators. They battle in an endless series of wars against the machines, which were likewise created by the aliens to take over the Earth. The alien themselves have not been seen for centuries now and the Androids are desperately trying to find a way to end the wars once and for all. The events of NieR:Automata take place in 11945, during the end of what is known as the 14th Machine War. The conflict between andoids and Machine seems to be as eternal as ever until 2B and 9S start encountering machines that have as much free will as they do. Something that was thought to be the difference between the two sides. This leads the duo to head down a path towards further revelations about the state of the world.

Back in June 2018, Yoko Taro, the mind behind the Drakengard series and the Nier spinoffs, expressed his desire to port NieR:Automata to the Nintendo Switch. This would take over four years to be concretized. NieR:Automata The End of YoRHa Edition was announced on June 28, 2022 during a Nintendo Direct Mini meant to showcase upcoming third party games on the Nintendo Switch. It was then announced that this version of the game would include all DLC and new costumes. It was then set to release on October 6 of the same year.
