Niantic, Inc. is an American software and mobile gaming company. Founded in 2010 as a division within Google, Niantic became an independent company in 2015. They are best known for developing augemented reality games, including Pokémon GO and Pikmin Bloom.
History[]
In 2010, Google employee John Hanke formed the Niantic Labs startup within Google, with about 35 employees at its founding. The company took its name from the Niantic, a fishing vessel that had visited San Francisco during the California Gold Rush.
In 2015, soon after Google announced a restructuring as Alphabet Inc, Niantic was spun off as its own company. Niantic also announced that Google, Nintendo, and The Pokémon Company would invest in the company.
On February 18, 2025, Niantic announce they were selling their video game business to Saudi Arabnian company Scopely. They also announced their geospatial business would be spun off into a new company.
