New Super Mario Bros. U is an upcoming Mario game for the Wii U. It was officially revealed at Nintendo's 2012 E3 conference on June 5th, 2012. The game allows for up to five players to play at the same time; One with the Wii U GamePad, and four others with Wii Remotes. Like New Super Mario Bros. Wii, players have the option to play as either Mario, Luigi, Yellow Toad, or Blue Toad, but unlike that game, players also have the option to play as their Mii characters. Yoshi also makes a return, and much like his first appearance in Super Mario World, when hatched out of an egg he is a baby which Mario can then carry. Yoshi now has the ability to inflate like a balloon and float through the air. A new power-up known as the Squirrel Acorn transforms Mario into Flying Squirrel Mario.

Gameplay

"The Wii U GamePad controller offers a new way to play multiplayer in this game. An extra player can jump into the action using the new Boost mode, creating platforms out of thin air to help others navigate tricky stages or access hidden or hard-to-reach items.

Boost mode also makes cooperative speed runs possible for the first time. Use the GamePad to interact with and manipulate enemies and objects in real time, allowing for new ways to find the fastest routes through each level.

Play on the big screen or the small screen. Switch game play from the TV to the GamePad at any time to continue playing even when others are using the TV.

Experience Mario together like never before with Miiverse. See other players' comments and accomplishments while you play and leave your own feedback for others to see when connected to the Nintendo Network."

History

Rumors about a New Super Mario Bros. title being in development for the Wii U had circulated since the Wii U tech-demo New Super Mario Bros. Mii was playable at E3 2011. In early 2012 Nintendo confirmed that they were indeed working on a new game based on that tech-demo. On Sunday, June 3rd 2012, during a Nintendo Direct live video stream, video of the game was shown, though not directly confirmed to be an actual game in development. The video focused on showing how the Wii U's social network Miiverse might be used while playing a game. The video showed comments from players around the world appearing when Mario failed a level as well as on the over-world map.
