Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm (JP) is a fighting game, digitally ported out to the Nintendo Switch console in 2018. It is an HD remake of the original copy released for the PlayStation 3 system in 2008 based on the Naruto manga and anime, it is the first to establish its Ultimate Ninja Storm series which has spawned three sequels since.
The game uses anime-style, cel-shaded graphics in homage to the anime series, but in contrast to the previous Naruto games they are now rendered in 3D. The game also features 25 different ninja fighters, all borrowed from the anime along with their fighting styles.
The game plays with similar mechanics to much of the previous Naruto titles, in that it consists of two ninjas who have to beat each other in a one-to-one combat until one of the fighters' health bars depletes completely to zero; they are not alone though, and will each have up to two support characters at their disposal.
The main changes include the graphics now being three-dimensional, and the inclusion of "Awakening Mode" where the fighter can unleash a powerful transformation and be equipped with stronger attacks and skills after losing a certain quantity of HP. Boss battles against gigantic beasts are also added to the mix.
As the game is based around the theme of ninjas, each character fights with jitsu attacks and perform ninja skills such as evasive maneuvres, running upon walls or even skimming over water etc. Another element that comes into play is "jitsu-clash", which comes into play when two ninjas initiate their special attacks at the same time, where the player will have to hit the inputted button as fast as possible to overpower the opponent.
As well as free battle, the game also comes included with an Ultimate Mission mode where the player's character interacts with the hub-world environment and undertakes various missions . The story that is accompaned with this is loosely based by the episodes of the anime.
