The battle system consists of three monsters on each player's side. Each player can have 50 cards and the goal is to deplete the opposing player's monsters' health. The only way to deal damage is to use an Attack card, but each Attack card requires Guts with more powerful ones requiring more. The player earns Guts by discarding cards each turn with the Guts value listed on the card. Each turn, the player gets up to 5 cards. There are also defense cards which can lower damage taken or have them evade the attack entirely, but it requires both the card to be in the player's hand when attacked and the requisite Guts to activate the card. Item cards can do a variety of supplementary actions like restoring health and enhancing the monster's attack, Since the player only has 50 cards for a match, if they use them all up, the player loses.
The game starts the player with a choice to play as a boy or a girl and a quiz which determines what initial deck the player will get; Power, Miracle, or Speed. The goal is to go through the various temples to unlock new cards. After defeating the boss at the end of each temple, there is a disk that unlocks a new Monster card at the Shrine.
