Monolith Soft is a first party Nintendo developer purchased by Nintendo in 2007. Prior to the buyout, Namco Bandai owned a majority of the company. Namco Bandai still owns a minor percentage of the company, as Nintendo only purchased 80% of Namco Bandai's 96%.

Monolith Soft was also credited in Super Smash Bros. Brawl for "development cooperation". Along with Nintendo and Game Arts, Monolith Soft co-developed the title. They were largely involved with the Adventure Mode and had over 30 employees that worked on the game.
