Mii Fighters are a set of playable Mii characters in the Super Smash Bros. series. They are divided into three styles: Brawler (red), Swordfighter (blue), and Gunner (orange).

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Miis were only incorporated as icons for online play (now discontinued). Director Masahiro Sakurai stated that he initially planned Miis as playable fighter characters, but "immediately decided against it" due to their overall nature and online bullying concerns.[1]

Background[]

Mii Fighters are customizable with special movesets, headgear, outfits, voice clips, and colors. Unlike other fighters, they can be created rather than unlocked, meaning they don't need to be necessarily defeated. Default colors depend on what color the Mii was originally created; for example, the fighter will have a yellow outfit if the original Mii was the same color. Though they appeared in many prior games, they are represented as Super Smash Bros. series likely due to their series-specific appearances. Between their appearances, they all have retained most of their special moves from 3DS/Wii U, while having new ones in Ultimate (detailed below). There's also a Fighting Mii Team version of the group where they use the Mii data from the user's console.

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, the Mii Fighters were first announced at the E3 2014 presentation, with Mii replicas of former Nintendo presidents Reggie Fils-Aimé and Satoru Iwata. They are playable in most modes, except regular Online play. Regarding that concern, Sakurai addressed about copyright and familiarity.[1] They can be enhanced with Equipment. In the character select screen, all three are listed and announced as "Mii". When chosen, an additional mini select screen is toggled. All three variants are available in a single selection.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Mii Fighters return as veterans. Like before, they can be created from the start and not unlocked through a battle. This time, they now have a set of twelve voice types, which can be adjusted by pitch: Low, Normal, and High. Colors can also be customized. They are playable in all online modes as well. They are now divided and announced individually, and their default renders with faded-out faces are used during the VS. screen before the battle, especially when interacting in Online modes. In replays, the Miis are renamed simply to their original fighter type names, privatizing the chosen names.
