Mewtwo is a species of Pokémon in the series of the same name. It is a Psychic-type legendary Pokémon that made its first appearance in the First Pokémon generation in the Red and Blue games. Mewtwo, as its name indicates, is a clone of the Mythical Pokémon Mew.

Mewtwo had two Mega Evolutions: Mega Mewtwo X (Psychic/Fighting-type) and Mega Mewtwo Y (Psychic-type). It is also a playable character in Pokkén Tournament, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Physiology and Behaviour[]

Mewtwo is an artificial Pokémon. It is a bipedal, humanoid Pokémon with some feline features. It is primarily gray with a long, purple tail. On top of its head are two short, blunt horns, and it has purple eyes. A tube extends from the back of its skull to the top of its spine, bypassing its neck. It has a defined chest and shoulders, which resemble a breastplate. The three digits on each hand and foot have spherical tips. Its tail is thick at the base but thins before ending in a small bulb.

Mewtwo was created after years of horrific gene splicing and DNA engineering experiments based on Mew. It is said to have the most savage heart among all Pokémon, lack compassion, and strike fear into its enemy with cold, glowing eyes. Because it was engineered to be the ultimate in battle, it can only think of defeating its foes. Though rarely seen in the wild, it is said to be resting in a dark cave somewhere. It has a rivalry with Mew. Mewtwo conserves energy by remaining motionless in order to unleash its full power in battle. It is also capable of materializing psychic waves in the form of its signature move, Psystrike.

According to the scientific logs found in the Pokémon Mansion of Cinnabar Island, Mewtwo was born from a pregnant Mew, found deep in the jungles of Guyana, whose embryo had been tampered with to alter its DNA. It was held and studied in the mansion where a scientist performed horrific gene-splicing experiments that made it vicious and extremely powerful. It eventually broke free of the Mansion, destroying it in the process, and fled. It can be encountered in Cerulean Cave, accessible only after a Trainer has proven their skill at the Indigo Plateau.

Mega Mewtwo X[]

Mega Mewtwo X is larger and bulkier than its normal state. The horns on its head are longer and extend from V-shaped ridges on its forehead. Additionally, the horns are now pointed and curve upward. It now has two tubes behind its neck, its eyes are light blue, and it has large, purple growths over its shoulders. Its torso is smooth and small compared to its long, bulky limbs, and a Y-shaped line connects the collar and underbelly. Its forearms and thighs each have two raised ridges and its digits are now longer and thinner. The tail is slightly shorter and stiffer than before and has a curled tip. Its muscles are augmented with psychic power, giving it a grip strength of one ton and the ability to sprint 100 meters in two seconds. When using moves in battle, it is shown to be able to stretch its arms and legs.

Mega Mewtwo Y[]

In comparison, Mega Mewtwo Y is smaller and lighter, losing its long tail and the tube behind its neck. However, it grows a long, purple appendage with a curled tip from the back of its head that is similar to its previous form's tail. On its head, it has two pointed, backward-curving spikes and a half-ring structure connecting to the base of each and crossing over the top of its head. Its eyes are now red and slightly larger. The digits on its hands and feet are now purple and more bulbous and the middle toe is longer than the others. A bumpy ridge similar to a sternum replaces the breastplate structure on its chest, but this form is still largely smoother than the other two. Despite its size, it has phenomenal mental power and is capable of smashing buildings with a mere thought.

Appearances[]

Pokémon games[]

Mewtwo appeared as a one-chance battle in the Cerulean Cave in the Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed, LeafGreen, HeartGold, SoulSilver and Let's Go accessible after defeating the Elite Four and League Champion (in HGSS, all Kanto Gym Leaders). In Pokémon X and Y, it appeared after beating the Elite Four in the Unknown Dungeon. Mewtwo had two Mega Evolutions. In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Mewtwo is obtainable in Ultra Space Wilds. In Pokémon Sword and Shield, Mewtwo appears in the Max Liar via Dynamax Adventure, while in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, in Ramanas Park. In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Mewtwo appeared in a 7-star Tera Raid event. It has also appeared in side-series Pokémon titles.

In the Nintendo 64 game, Pokémon Stadium, it was the final battle challenge after defeating the Gym Leader Castle and getting all of the trophies in the Stadium. Defeating him rolls the credits, changes the title screen image, and unlocks Round 2 of the Stadium. Defeating Mewtwo in Round 2 is the final test in the game (besides getting all 151 Pokémon into the Hall of Fame).

Mewtwo also appears as the final boss in Pokémon Puzzle League.

Mewtwo appeared in Detective Pikachu, playing a major role. Mewtwo returned in Detective Pikachu Returns.

Super Smash Bros. series[]

Super Smash Bros

Mewtwo in Ultimate

Mewtwo was planned for inclusion in the roster in Super Smash Bros.. Like Bowser and King Dedede, it was removed from the game during development.

In an official poll held on Smabura-Ken regarding characters for a potential sequel, Mewtwo placed sixth with 35 votes; it was tied with James Bond from GoldenEye 007.

Mewtwo made its Smash debut in Super Smash Bros. Melee as an unlockable character, available to challenge after 20+ hours of VS. matches or 700+ VS. matches. Ironically, Mewtwo is considered to be one of the worst characters in the game, due to him being slow, light, and big, making him an easy target. Masachika Ichimura voiced Mewtwo in the game, just like in the first movie. The Mewtwo in Smash was inspired by the Mewtwo that appeared in the first movie, with elements from the 16th movie such as its Mega Evolution, Boxing Ring title, and Final Smash included in the later games.

Mewtwo is not playable in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but Lucario, a new playable Pokémon, has some similar mechanics to Mewtwo. Mewtwo, however, appears as a trophy, which can be unlocked by playing All-Star Mode on Intense difficulty.

Mewtwo returned in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, when a person buys and registers both versions. This downloadable content was released on April 28, 2015. Mewtwo also has a trophy for its regular form in the 3DS version and its Mega Forms in the Wii U version in addition to its fighter trophies added on April 15, 2015. Mewtwo also returned to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as an unlockable character, with its Mega Y form appearing as a Spirit and also appeared on its Final Smash. Instead of Masachika Ichimura, Mewtwo is voiced by Keiji Fujiwara in both games.

Attacks[]

Its specials are:

  • Neutral Special: Shadow Ball
  • Side Special: Confusion
  • Down Special: Disable
  • Up Special: Teleport
  • Final Smash: Psystrike (Mega Evolves into Mega Y)

Pokkén Tournament[]

Mewtwo is a confirmed character for Pokkén Tournament as well as Shadow Mewtwo.

Anime[]

Original series[]

MewtwoM01

Mewtwo in Pokémon the First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back

Mewtwo first appeared in the anime episode, The Battle of the Badge and is featured in Pokémon the First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back as an antagonist, but is redeemed by the end. This same Mewtwo later appeared in the special Mewtwo Returns. It also appeared in Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution, the CGI remake of the first. It also appeared in the musical Pokémon Live!, saving Ash Ketchum from Giovanni. This Mewtwo was originally intended to appear in Genesect and the Legend Awakened, but the rights of the character were in dispute between then-recently deceased Takeshi Shudo's estate as well as the people making the movies, resulting in a different character being created during this time (see below).

In the first movie, where it was shown to be capable of levitation, telepathy, mind control, and the ability to create powerful storms, Mewtwo exemplified these vicious characteristics. However, it was later shown to be caring, protective, and even altruistic.

The same Mewtwo guest starred in the Pokémon Journeys: The Series episode Getting More Than You Battled For!, living in Cero Island, where it accepted a challenge from Ash and Goh, winning easily. Mewtwo briefly appeared alongside its friends in These Could be the Starts of Something Big!, flying off in the background as Ash and Goh rode on Lugia.

Black and White[]

A different Mewtwo appears in the movie Pokémon the Movie: Genesect and the Legend Awakened and shows its Mega Mewtwo Y form. Unlike the original Mewtwo, this Mewtwo had a female voice. This Mewtwo shared its aversion to contact with others but was much less belligerent.

Other[]

Mewtwo's Mega X form appeared in several cameos in several episodes and movies.

Mewtwo also appeared in Pokémon Origins, where it was captured by Red thanks to his Mega Charizard X.

A Mirage Mewtwo appeared in The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon, where it was the most powerful Pokémon controlled by the Mirage Master. However, it was eventually defeated when Pikachu destroyed the Mirage System, which was controlling it.

Mewtwo appeared in a major role in the Detective Pikachu movie.

Mewtwo appeared in Pokémon Evolutions, where Green and Trace raced to try and catch it, only to discover that Elaine had done so minutes beforehand.

Mewtwo appeared in The Journey of One Dream, under Vinn's ownership.

Other media[]

Mewtwo fought Shadow the Hedgehog in Death Battle and won.

Mewtwo appeared in the music video for Celestial. It battled Mew in an animated sequence, with Ed Sheeran and his Pokémon in the crossfire trying to stop them.

Origin and inspiration[]

Like Mew, Mewtwo has some embryo characteristics, but its body structure is much larger as a result of gene splicing. It also has some characteristics of a grey alien and a salamander.

Mega Mewtwo Y, much like Mew, has the characteristics of a vertebrate embryo.

Mewtwo may be a combination of Mew or mutant and two.

Trivia[]

  • One of the Pokémon Mansion journals states Mewtwo's birthday is February 6.
    • The same journal implies Mew was impregnated with the modified clone, just like with real-life cloning. All other depictions show Mewtwo being grown using laboratory equipment.
  • Mega Mewtwo Y was the first Mega Evolution revealed to the public.
    • It was also the first to appear in the anime, even before Mega Evolution was announced.
    • Prior to the announcement of Mega Evolution, Mega Mewtwo Y was referred to as its 「覚醒した姿」 Awakened Form.
  • Even though Mewtwo never appeared in Super Smash Bros. Brawl there have been many unused files found in Brawl to suggest that Mewtwo was originally going to be a playable character.
  • Mewtwo is one of the two Pokémon to get 2 Mega Evolution, with Charizard being the other.
  • Mewtwo's English voice actress in Pokémon the Movie: Genesect and the Legend Awakened, Miriam Pultro, has occasionally alluded to fan controversy surrounding the character due to contradictions with the original Mewtwo, such as with a series of posts on her Facebook fanpage, with one post stating that she felt "equally terrified and thrilled" about getting the role.
  • Mewtwo's Mega Evolved forms are the highest base stat total among all Psychic-type Pokémon. It is also tied with Mega Rayquaza for the highest base stat total of all Pokémon, with 780, excluding non-playable Eternamax Eternatus.
    • Mega Mewtwo X has the highest base Attack of all Pokémon, as well as the highest single base stat and base Special Attack of all Fighting-type Pokémon.
    • Mega Mewtwo Y has the highest base Special Attack of all Pokémon and the highest single base stat of all Psychic-type Pokémon.
  • Mewtwo is the only Legendary and genderless Pokémon to be playable in the Super Smash Bros. series.
  • Mewtwo and Lucario are the only playable Pokémon whose on-screen appearances do not involve them emerging from a Poké Ball.
