A Metroid Larva is the third and most common stage of a Metroid's natural life cycle.

Description[]

The larvae are so common, they are simply called "Metroids". They are known for being extremely ravenous, constantly looking for energy to consume from other creatures. On SR388, the larva eventually become Alpha Metroids, but the larva have unique traits that make them more desirable than the later stages of their life cycle.

Appearances[]

Metroid/Metroid: Zero Mission[]

Metroid larvae only appear in Tourian. To defeat them, Samus must freeze them with her Ice Beam, then shoot them with five missiles. In the NES Metroid, Samus has to switch between the Ice and Wave Beams at certain Chozo statues.

Metroid Prime[]

In Metroid Prime, Metroids appear primarily in Space Pirate populated areas, specifically the Glacier One lab in Phendrana Drifts and the Phazon Mines, as well as the Impact Crater during the battle with the second form of Metroid Prime. In addition to the normal Metroids, there are also Hunter Metroids and Fission Metroids.

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes[]

Metroids are first seen in the Space Pirate facility in Agon Wastes. This time, though, their membrane is red in color as opposed to the usual green, and they are called “Tallon Metroids” since they were taken from Tallon IV. There are also infant versions and Ing-possessed variants.

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption[]

Metroid Prime 3 introduces Phazon Metroids, heavily mutated Metroids. They are first encountered in an Xenoresearch Lab on Elysia. They also appear on the Pirate Homeworld, as well as the G.F.S. Valhalla, and Phaaze.

Metroid II/Metroid: Samus Returns[]

Metroid larvae are seen at various points in the game, before they become Alpha Metroids. They are only fought in Area 8, before gaining an audience with the Queen Metroid. In the original game, there are eight of them, but the remake has ten of them.

Super Metroid[]

Like in the first game and its remake, Metroid larvae only appear in Tourian; there are 12 of them in total throughout the first four rooms in the area. However, weaker versions of them known as Mochtroids are encountered in Maridia.

Metroid: Other M[]

Metroid larvae only appear during the boss battle against the Queen Metroid in Room MW of the Bioweapon Research Center. She spawns up to six of them; first one, then two, then three. Luckily, this time, avoiding them is easier thanks to Samus's SenseMove ability. Unlike the times Samus fought them in the 2D games, when the Metroids are frozen, they fall to the floor, giving her a chance to blast them with three missiles or one Super Missile.

Metroid Fusion[]

A Metroid larva is seen on a screen in the opening sequence of the game, and another makes a cameo in the Restricted Laboratory.
