Metroid II: Return of Samus <sup>(JPJapanese: メトロイドIIRETURN OF SAMUS

Romaji: Metoroido Tsū Ritān Obu Samusu)</sup> (also known as Metroid II) is a video game for the Game Boy handheld. It is the second game in the Metroid series. The game's protagonist, Samus Aran, must once again traverse through large caves and defeat plenty of enemy aliens.

This game is a lot more linear than the first game. The game is available in Virtual Console.  If the player was a gold member of the Club Nintendo in 2012, he could exchange coins for it.

A Nintendo 3DS remake known as Metroid: Samus Returns was released on September 15, 2017.

Story

The story of Metroid II follows the protagonist and playable character Samus Aran, who has been hired and sent on a mission to exterminate all the Metroid creatures from their home planet SR388 before the antagonistic Space Pirates obtain and use them.

Driving deeper and deeper into planet SR388 Samus finds many new evolutions of Metroids and has to gain new power ups to be able to defeat the increasingly powerful enemies.

And as she finally digs deep enough Samus encounters the Queen Metroid, the mother of all Metroids. Can she defeat it and save the galaxy?

Gameplay

The game is a sequel to the first Metroid game and has several gameplay similarities. Samus has a variety of weapons to help her win.

Two new weapons have been added to the series; the special laser beam and the plasma beam. The player can only equip one beam at a time though. Metroid 2 has a new suit enhancement called the space jump that enhances jump height.

There are two new ball transformations; the spring ball and the spider ball. The spring ball gives Samus the ability to jump in ball form and the spider ball gives Samus the ability to climb most walls and ceilings.

There are different sections of the levels. In these sections there are the metroids. Other sections are blockes of by lava. And the lava only disappears when all of the metroids in that section are beaten.

• The game won 4 awards in the 1991 Nintendo Power Awards: Best Graphics and Sound (Game Boy), Best Challenge (Game Boy), Best Play Control (Game Boy), and Best Overall Game Boy Game.
