MercurySteam Entertainment S.L., shortened as MercurySteam, is a spanish video game company that was founded in 2002. They have worked on various games for most relevant platforms since their foundation. They have recently started working with Nintendo on 2D Metroid games.

History[]

The company was originally founded by former members of Rebel Act Studios, who previously developed Severance: Blade of Darkness in 2001. They spent the rest of the decade working on self contained projects released on PC or Microsoft's consoles. Around the late 2000s, they started working with Konami on a trilogy of games in the Castlevania series. The first being Lords of Shadow, the second being Mirror of Fate, and the third being Lords of Shadow 2.

After the last game in the trilogy released in 2014, MercurySteam pitched a Metroid Fusion remake to Nintendo. The pitch was rejected because Nintendo had no interest in remaking Fusion, instead Yoshio Sakamoto, told them that they would accept a remake of Metroid II: Return of Samus instead, as it was the most outdated Metroid game at that point. The remake titled Metroid: Samus Returns was released in 2017 for the Nintendo 3DS. In 2020 Nordisk Film bought a minority share in the company.

After the release of Samus Returns, Nintendo was impressed by their work and they decided to keep them to work on a new Metroid game. That game would be Metroid Dread, which released in 2021.
