Master Kohga is a character and a Boss from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. He is the leader of the Yiga Clan during the events of Breath of the Wild, a group of Sheikah rebels devoted to Calamity Ganon. He is met in the Yiga Clan Hideout. Master Kohga also appears as a playable character in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.

Kohga is informal, boisterous, and quick to lose his temper. He is very confident in his physical abilities, describing himself as "strong" and "burly." He seems to be a charismatic leader, as members of his clan will attempt to avenge him after his defeat.

The Calamity Occurs

In the timeline during which Calamity Ganon isn't stopped and ravages the land, Master Kohga is presumed to be the leader of the Yiga Clan for an unknown amounts of years before the start of Breath of the Wild. Master Kohga and his clan have known about the return of Link from his 100 years slumber and have been hunting him down across Hyrule. Link encounters various Yiga Footsoldier before he even knows that they were dispatched by Kohga.

Kohga has taken residence in the Yiga Clan Hideout and has been harassing the Gerudos for a while before the game starts. The Yigas are even able to infiltrate Gerudo Town and steal the Thunder Helm from Makeela Riju. When Link comes along, he is tasked with retrieving the helm if he wants to even hope to get close to the Divine Beast Vah Naboris. Link encounters Kohga in the Hideout and the leader of the Yiga clan quickly recognize him as the hero and tries to kill him. Link defeats him and as he try to summon a huge spike ball to crush Link, it backfires and the ball start rolling towards him and he fall in a huge pit shouting that the Yiga clan will avenge him.

The Calamity is averted

Master Kohga is already the leader of the Yiga clan 100 years ago in the alternate timeline. He is first seen disguised as Urbosa and giving orders to the Gerudos to kill Princess Zelda. He is unmasked by the real Urbosa and immediatly reveal his Yiga followers who invade Gerudo Town. He is eventually cornered but escape thanks to Sooga, his right hand man. He is later seen working under Astor who has been giving order to the Yiga clan since he was contacted by the Harbinger Ganon.

Kohga is later seen at his Hideout complaining that the heroes will be able to locate them if they reactivate all the Sheikah Towers. He dispatches the Yigas to stop them but that fails and they are eventually raided and forced to escape. After the battle, they confront Astor who they accuse of showing up late and Sooga even threaten him but Astor reminds them that as Ganon's prophet hurting him would be going against Ganon himself so they let him go.

After Ganon awakens, the heroes manage to get rid of the blights who killed the Champions in the original timeline. Astor is then seen stealing the souls of Yiga Footsoldiers to revive them. Kohga and Sooga are understandably against this but Astor tell them that they are no longer needed before sending a Hollow Link after them. Kohga tries to flee at first but decide to stay with Sooga until there is no other option. The outcome of the battle is unknown, it may be implied that Sooga was killed. Kohga later approach the princess after she has awakened her powers to explain the situation and tell her that his clan is willing to defect from Ganon's side. From that point on, Kohga is in all the major battles of the war against Calamity Ganon until the end.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

As a Boss Master Kohga can be defeated by using the Stasis Rune and Magnesis Rune of the Sheikah Slate to stun him with his own boulders. Once stunned, most conventional weapons deal damage, but ranged ones will definitely be helpful as he often moves rapidly around the boss area. Eventually, he will unleash a massive boulder, large enough to obscure his view of Link, claiming it to be the ultimate technique of the Yiga Clan. However, the boulder ends up rolling towards him and falls down with him down the pit, with him declaring that the Yiga Clan will avenge him.

Defeating him allows Link to reclaim the stolen Thunder Helm for Gerudo Chief Makeela Riju. The Divine Beast Vah Naboris generates highly powerful lightning making it impossible to enter the dungeon, and the helm is required to protect Link and allow him to access and free the Divine Beast.

Hyrule Compendium Entry

"The leader of the Yiga Clan, a group formed with just a single objective: eliminate Link. He sends his minions all over Hyrule in search of you but tends to spend most of his own time napping and generally loafing about. Despite this, his mastery of the esoteric arts has earned him a deep respect. Even if he were to die, his followers would never give up their one and only task."
