Marina Ida is a reoccurring character in the Splatoon series. A former Octoling fighter who defected after the events of the first game, she became a member of Off the Hook with the Inkling Pearl. The group was featured in Splatoon 2 and hosts their own television show, similar to the Squid Sisters from the first game. The two also make prominent appearnaces in the Splatoon 2 DLC Octo Expansion as well as the Splatoon 3 DLC Side Order.

History[]

Prior to Splatoon 2[]

Like most other Octolings, Marina was born into Octarian society and taught to fight from a young age. An 83rd-generation combat engineer, she graduated from elementary school at age nine and designed the robotic Flooder enemy. She became a high-ranking and well-known member of Octarian society as a member of DJ Octavio's wasabi supply unit.

During the final battle of Splatoon, Marina was one of the Octoling soldiers who heard the Squid Sisters sing Calimari Inkantation. After hearing this, she deserted the Octarian army and fled to Mount Nantai. There, she met an Inkling named Pearl who was practicing her singing. Despite not knowing the Inkling language, Marina was able to learn about Inkling culture from Pearl. She returned to Mount Nantai for two weeks hoping to see her again. When she did, Marina showed Pearl her demo of Ebb & Flow and the two agreed to form Off the Hook. The duo became popular and eventually took over news hosting duties from the Squid Sisters.

Splatoon 2[]

Marina and Pearl host the news show in Splatoon 2, which provides info on the current stages. They don't play a major role in the game's story mode, only announcing the disappearance of Callie and the Great Zapfish at the beginning and announcing their rescue at the end.

Octo Expansion[]

Marina and Pearl make a more prominent appearance in Octo Expansion, though they only appear in-person at the end. After hearing Cap'n Cuttlefish and Agent 8's transmissions in the Deepsea Metro, Marina and Pearl (under the usernames "DJ_Hyperfresh" and "MC.Princess" respectively) agree to help Cuttlefish and Agent 8 escape the metro. During this, the group communicates via chatroom, by which Pearl learns that Marina was a former member of the Octarian army.

After Agent 8 collects the four Thangs, escapes the Deepsea Metro, and defeats a brainwashed Agent 3, they appear in-person and help bring Agent 3 to safety. They also assist in the battle against Commander Tartar, with Marina devising the plan to defeat him using the hyperbombs she developed. After Agent 8 covers the NILS Statue in ink, Pearl uses her Princess Cannon to finish it off, defeating Tartar. With crisis averted, the group returns to Inkopolis.

Splatoon 3: Side Order[]

Some time between Octo Expansion and Splatoon 3, Pearl and Marina joined a band with three other members called Damp Socks feat. Off the Hook.

Prior to Side Order Marina developed a VR world called the Memverse, which she intended as a way to restore the memories of sanitized Octolings. However, the world was taken over by Order, an AI created as part of the world, trapping Marina, Pearl, Agent 8, and Marina's friend from the Octarian world Acht in. Marina in particular was mind controlled and left as part of a machine, though Agent 8 and Pearl (in the form of a drone) are able to free her. From then on Marina provides hacks to Agent 8 for Prlz, allowing them to upgrade their abilities as they ascend the tower and fight Order.

Personality[]

Compared to her bandmate Pearl, Marina is more reserved and shy. She is shown to be a bit timid, possibly due to her often not being recognized as an Octoling. In early international versions of Splatoon 2 Marina was slightly more sarcastic than in later iterations; Octo Expansion explains this as her wanting to hide her lack of self-confidence. In Japanese dialogue she speaks with occasional Katakana phrases and uses the personal pronound "watashi", indicating she is speaking formally.

Marina is also skilled in technology, having developed the Flooder and later the Memverse. She also hacked into Kamabo Corporation and Agent 8's CQ-80 device, and in Side Order she provides hacks to assist Agent 8 in ascending the tower. She is said to have graduated from elementary school at an early age and is shown to be quite intelligent. She is also friends with Acht from their time in the Octarian world.

Marina is heavily implied to have a crush on her bandmate Pearl. On the Japanese Splatoon Base she describes herself as a "maiden in love", and on multiple occasions draws Pearl in a bishōjo style. In Side Order she is shown to have a picture of Pearl as her computer background, and in her diary she uses heart emojis when referring to Pearl, also comparing herself to a princess with Pearl as the warrior who must rescue her. She also gets upset with Acht when she thinks they are flirting with Pearl in front of her.[1]

 Appearance[]

Marina is an Octoling, the Octarian version of an Inkling. She has dark skin and black tentacles with teal edges. Her outfit consists of a top covering her chest with a large, mostly undone silver zipper and a high collar, leaving her midriff visible. She has black shorts over teal leggings and also wears black boots. She appears to have large headphones on her head.

Trivia[]

  • According to Side Order, Marina once developed a rhythm game that ran at 888 BPM, and Acht was her only classmate able to beat it. She also says she developed an even faster version after Pearl found it too easy to beat.
