Maniac Mansion is a point and click game, developed by Lucasfilm Games. The NES version is a 1988 port of a 1987 home computer game. It was later made into a television series, although little from the game survived into the TV show's plot.
Plot[]
20 years ago, a sentient meteor crashed to Earth, near the Edison mansion, owned by an oddball family known as the Edisons. The meteor took control of Dr. Fred, the patriarch of the family, and ordered him to build the Zom-B-Matic machine, which would transform teenagers into zombie slaves of the meteor. Student Dave Miller assembles a part to infiltrate the mansion when his girlfriend Sandy gets kidnapped.
Gameplay[]
Play begins with selecting two additional kids to help hero Dave Miller infiltrate the mansion to rescue his girlfriend. Each kid besides Dave has some special skill they can use during the game. The player then uses a selection of different verbs to tell characters how to interact with the different things in the mansion. Items and skills are used to open doors to new areas and solve various puzzles. At times scripted events take place that can impact how the game unfolds depending on how the player interacts with them. Ultimately the game features different endings depending on who and how the player got through Dr. Fred's security and got rid of the source of the mansion's evil.
