Lightning

Artwork from Mario Kart.

Lightning appears throughout video games as magic elements and even items in the Mario Kart series. In many RPGs, Lightning is better known as Thunder. In the Pokémon series, Lightning is the symbol of the electric type.

Mario Kart series[]

Lightning first appeared as an item in the SNES video game Super Mario Kart. In the game, the item would shrink literally every other player in the race except the one who launched the attack. Once shrunk, the larger player could crush everyone else by ramming into them. If two shrunken players ran into each other, then they'd both shrink. The shrinking aspect of the item was retained in every other video game following Super Mario Kart. So far, this item has appeared in the following:

The only video games in the series not to include Lightning are Mario Kart: Super Circuit for the Game Boy Advance and the arcade titles.

Super Smash Bros. series[]

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii, the Lightning item will shrink all the players on the stage excluding the one who launched it. Sometimes, however, the item will backfire and only shrink the player who touched it. Coupled with the Poison Mushroom, this item can become very deadly. A glitch in the game will occur if Zelda uses Transform right before the effect of Lightning ends, thus making her remain shrunken.

The Item returns in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U.

Trophy information[]

An item that goes off the moment you touch it. It may shrink every other character on the screen. Tiny players suffer a reduction in their attack power and become easier to send flying. After a set amount of time, all the characters will return to their normal sizes. In the Mario Kart series, all players but the item user shrunk, and got flattened when run over.

Dotstream[]

In the Game Boy Advance video game bit Generations: Dotstream, Lighting is among the three powerups. Lightning, like the other powerups in the game, can be acquired by sending the player's racer through a flashing square that appears on the stage. Once acquired, the player can activate it by pressing the A button. Doing this will remove all of the moving obstacles on the stage. A downside of this item is that it also removes the moving obstacles for the player's opponents as well.
