Gameplay[]

Plot[]

In a post-apocalyptic world where technology has been relinquished to the past, a mysterious infant was found in the mountains by Teersa—the matriarch of the Nora tribe. Despite the matriarch's enthusiasm, the Nora were wary of raising an unknown orphan within their village. One of the tribe's hunters, Rost, volunteered to leave with the infant and live in seclusion. He named the child Aloy and decided to train her in archery after witnessing her remarkable marksmanship.

After coming of age, Aloy leaves to visit the Nora village—Mother's Heart—for the first time to learn more about her origins from Teersa. Rost accompanies Aloy on this journey and gifts her a Focus, a device found alongside her by Teersa, that allows her to visualize the world in augmented reality. She gains the power to detect important objects as well as weak-points of zoological-based machines that threaten the wild. The two defeats a Broadhead and arrives at the village, only to encounter a strange cult kidnapping Teersa and the Nora villagers.

Sona, the village defender, explains that the cult attacked after luring her away from her post. With the village damaged and emptier than ever, Aloy and Rost embark to rescue the Nora while Sona secures the village. Sona also requests the duo to find her son, Varl, who left earlier to help the villagers. They track the cult to the Sacred Lands and free some villagers in the process. One of the freed villagers, Teb, returns to the village and finds his tailor shop severely damaged. Aloy helps rebuild the shop with her Focus and is rewarded with access to Teb's handmade costumes. Meanwhile, other villagers are anxious over rumors of a giant machine roaming around Mother's Heart. Aloy and Rost depart to investigate the rumor and encounter the a mysterious trader. They also find the comic-loving Varl on the way. However, Varl dismisses his mother's concerns and goes his own way to prove himself a hero. Sona frets over Varl, but resigns herself to praying for his safe return instead.

Helis the cult leader contacts them to explain his plan of destroying nature. They find Karst and ultimately Teersa. Teersa takes Aloy to the All-Mother Mountain to see her birthplace and finds the All-Mother Elisabet. Elisabet implores the group to find three metal flowers. They ultimately find the three flowers and build a huge arrow. After defeating Helis in the Sunfall Desert, they have to fight Buried Shadow in a corrupted Jewel Rainforest. They defeat the Deathbringer and shoot the Buried Shadow with the arrow, destroying it once and for all.
